Im moving on up from my first Gen. I can't wait till i get the new X.
But im curious on a few things. Like i want a 5.0 for the power, sound and supposedly they have an f150 trans in it. But are all 5.0's awd? Or can i find them in 4x4? I don't really know how awd does in the woods, but i've heard its not the best. Im also looking at 1999 to 2001 xlt's or sports. And i will without a doubt consider a 97-99. Im going to do the usual 3 inch body lift, TT and shackles to fit 33's. Though i might do TT and shackles and try and squeeze 32's in there and do the BL later and leave it with 32's. Any helpful tips would be great.

Buy the newest 5.0L you can get a deal on. They're either AWD or 2WD. But you cab easily convert to 4x4 using the many write ups on this site. There were no V8 2-doors either.

Yeah i looked into it a little bit. Seems like a decent amount of work. Idk i might just go with a V6 4x4. There still great trucks with alot of power. After replacing the trans on my 94 im done with big projects for a little while. lol

Crap, after looking on youtube some more i LOVE the sound of the 5.0's. AHHHH hahah i cant make up my mind.

Stock for stock the v6 sohc has a faster 0-60 then the v8 but the v8 comes alive once you add some hop ups. I have a sohc sport '98 and love it. It has the 4.10 gears and is a lot of fun to drive and off road. If you are going to do a lot of towing you might want to look at the v8. Otherwise mpg are similar but the sohc has a lot more potential.

If you are looking for a V8, don't rule out Mountaineers. Most of the Mounties are V8 AWD, which is a nice setup.

V8 all the way. As previously posted you can easily swap over to 4x4 instead of AWD

I think ill do the V8. I just can't pass up that sound. If i can do a tranny the 4x4 swap shouldnt be too hard.

you dont need to swap the trans. you need just the transfercase, so it should be child's play. I just did the swap myself and other than you have to pull the fuel tank front bracket and lower the tank to get it out of the way, it's fairly easy if you've worked on cars for a while (I hadn't and therefore had to ask a few questions here and there)

Crap, after looking on youtube some more i LOVE the sound of the 5.0's. AHHHH hahah i cant make up my mind.

I've had all three engines avaialble for the 2nd gen and the 5.0 is by far my fave. The SOHC V6 is fun too but with all the timing chain crap, it's not worth the risk. My last truck with the SOHC had the problems, but warranty took care of it. I love the 2nd gen and will never own anything bu the 5.0. I've had mine for 4.5 years (2nd owner) and it's been super reliable. Oh, don't forget the TMH option. :D

Like the others said - 5.0 is the only way to go! My AWD 97 mounty just rolled over 200,000 mi and runs great. If I could figure out how to fix the &^*&$# door latches and power locks, it would be a perfect truck!

As for AWD vs 4WD - I don't do any serious 4 wheeling. But - for crappy snowy roads plus an occasional drive in the woods, AWD seems much better. The 5.0 has enough low-end power that I don't miss not having a low range in the xfer case.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Im definitely going for the 5.0. I have already swapped out a transmission so the transfer case swap shouldn't be too crazy. lol I can live with AWD for a while until i get the t-case and such and i just cant pass up the extra power and amazing sound.
