newto the forums, as it says just scored an 01 for $100. Believe it or not it runs, but doesnt move.:D Seller said transmission housing is cracked. Dont have it home yet to see the exact issue. Was wondering if anyone had a Guestimate on a price for a transmission. I can swap it myself, so no labor needed. Worked on stangs for years,, those transmissions are a dime a dozen, dont know how easy these are to come by.

Also do the center console lids break on alot of vehicles? mine is broke and i saw one for sale, had a similar break. Anyone offer aftermarket replacements?

Welcome to the forum! I would say because the amount of problems that the transmission, had and have, you will find a replacement for around 1200 rebuilt on ebay and such. If you have done swaps before then this shouldn't be too hard of a challenge to tackle especially for $100.

The console on those btw constantly break from what I have seen on the forums.

Post some pictures when you do get the truck!

Welcome To Explorer Forum, sounds like a good find for that. Transmission is not that bad to do, you will want a rebuilt transmission not a junkyard transmission. I'm guessing you have the shorty console if you say the arm rest is broke? If so you can get the arm rest from a 91+ Explorer those arm rests are same size, just pop the caps off the back side of the console and there is 2 bolts on each side.

hmm so those Mystery 100.00 auction vehicles do exist after all. What auction did ya go to? i need to get me a 100.00 vehicle too.

Wow...Double wow. I can't believe you scored a vehicle for less than scrap price. If the tranny thing doesn't work out you should be able to part it out and scrap the rest for a fairly healthy profit.

Anyway, try car-part.com to scan local junkyards for transmissions. It also wouldn't hurt to check the for sale section here on the forum, as well as Craigslist. Someone else mentioned $1200 and that seems about right but I'm not very well versed in transmission costs.

Nice buy!

keep an eye on craigslist. one was listed near me recently for $600.00 with the claim it came out a sport trac with 26,000 miles. thought about picking it up just in case but i already have too much clutter to be able to justify getting it. hope i dont need it some day. welcome to the forum.

I third or fourth on the rebuilt wit a new torque convertor.
although it's hard to justify around 15x the money to repair it.

this was actually a once in a lifetime score, not an auction, almost fate. Those guys that swear by "if you want something ask for it, the worst someone can say is no" are so right. I work for a police dept., and I was taking reports for vehicles that were broken into overnight at a local bar. I was checking the rest of the vehicles in the lot, and I found the sport trac was unlocked, and had the keys in the ignition! I thought, ok its got a flat and no tags, probably doesnt run. So i checked it...started right up. So better than taking the report later for it being stolen, i grabbed the keys and registration, contacted the owner to pick them up. He told me he called to donate it, but they never picked it up. I asked if he tried to sell it, he said "no but if you or someone else wants it, its yours" meaning "free" I said I couldnt take it for nothing, both pride and professionalism reasons, so he said "ok how bout $100. Called him the next day, going to pick it up tommorow. I figure, even if it costs me $2000 to get it running nicely, its still less than half the blue book on this truck. And i must say its about the coolest truck/suv hybrid there is. Ill post some pics soon.

And as far as the console its got one of those built in zippered bags?????

Also I found 2 companys that are offering reman trannys for $625 give or take on ebay. Ill have to look into it a little further for quality. Im guessing everyone is suggesting remans due to the prevelent problems in the early models years. i have read many reviews of slipping and overdrive warning light problems. Wherever I get it hopefully they have fixed these issues. Any suggestions welcome. thanks

well that's nice, and if you're willing to get a rebuilt trans, and torque convertor, excellent, it'll last for a while.

I was going to suggest cam chain tensioners as well, my chains rattle on cold start. Not sure what the exact service would be for that. If you decide to pull the motor.

there's some threads about center console swaps to do away with the zippered bag things (never seen them myself though)

Definately bug ncranchero (Steve) for any tech help.

looks like this truck is a pretty early one, A01560, think its the 1560th sport trac for 2001.

is the 4 wheel drive tranny the same as 2 wheel, just with an added transfer case?

Unlocked w/keys and nobody has stolen the console bag or the whole vehicle ..... in MD????:eek: That bag will eBay for almost as much as you paid for the truck if it's in good or better shape! (worthless if you ask me though)

Transmissions are 5R55E for the 4x2 & 4x4.

Take your VIN and plug it in HERE . You'll find a lot of interesting info on your "new" truck.

Man, what a deal you got !!

:ttiwwp:

so people want these bags? I hosed it off let it dry...looks fantastic. zips all up and isnt ripped, ill have to look into that, thanks:chug:

Think ill start athread called "project 100 bucks", show pics and progress.

I'm jealous of your good fortune. Whichever way you go with this, you're going to make out well. Congratulations.
