K & N Filter - What will this do for me?

I am looking at purchasing the K & N filter but i recall some people had problems with their MAS after installation. I run a stock XLT and would like some more horsepower and better fuel economy. Should I buy the filter and if my MAS does go out, how much will it cost to replace?

I just bought a K&N airfilter. I haven't had any problems since I installed it and it has helped my fuel economy. As far as added HP there isn't a drastic change since the filter itself only offer 2-3 extra HP. But nonetheless I am very pleased with the purchase and would recommend it. Just don't want you to have any false hopes of a drastic chane in Horse Power. But I think it would be a very good investment.

Adding holes to the airbox along with the new filter will make the biggest difference. It helps the engine to breathe better. Just do a search for drilled airbox or holes and you should find a couple of hundred posts about it. Definite improvement!

David-the K&N is one of the first things I did to my '91XLT way back. It hasn't hurt my MAS in anyway. I think the major problem that causes the MAS problem is getting a filter that may be too heavily oiled. I have a spare so I always have a clean one ready to pop in since it does take awhile for it to dry once its cleaned. I also make sure I only lightly recoat it with oil. Along with the modified airbox set-up, you will notice a fairly large difference in throttle response, sound and if you manage to keep from using the added gains on acceleration, you'll gain some mpg as well. The other good thing is it does pay for itself in the long run and you do save the planet from adding those used paper filters to the trash heap.
