K&N?

What is the difference between the K&N Fuel Injection Performance Kit and the KKM True-Rev Induction Kit? Is one better than the other...about the same?

K&N replaces your stock intake up to the throttle body, KKM just replaces your filter box.

Performance wise- they are about the same. The rest you're just paying for the looks.

I've been seeing alot of people metioning the MAC Intake also. How does it rate to the K&N and the KKM?

I personally have the K&N on my 01 sport SOHC. I love it so far...I think it's worth the extra money and it looks bad ass under the hood...

How is it worth the extra money? Have you compared it to anything else?

ALL of the filter elements mentioned are about the same thing. The variations in intake tubes will make make no real performance difference on a '95+ Explorer. This is different on a 91-'94, where any aftermarket tube will help.

K&Ns run higher prices because they are CARB certified, not because they are a better filter. They spent the time, effort, and money to get their filters tested and certified and pass those expenses on to their customers. Of course, CARB certification is important if you live in an area with emmision testing that requires it. If you don't live in an area with testing, there really isn't reason to spend the extra dough on the K&N (except for the looks factor).

Excellent! Thanks for the info. I've been running with just a drop-in K&N. Was thinking it was high time to convert the intake too.

Hey Robb, couldn't you just buy the inexpensive intake and buy the K&N emission sticker and be emission legal?

That is, IF you could buy the sticker.

I doubt K&N would sell you just the sticker, in fact I am certain they won't, at least without proof that you purchased a K&N FIPK. I needed to have K&N replace my metal MAF to filter adapter. I over torqued one of the bolts which pulled it right through the cast aluminum adapter. I contacted their customer support. They had me send them a picture of my adapter as well as a copy of my receipt before would send me out a replacement adapter under warranty. They said it had something to do with the CARB approval. I think they wanted to be sure that I wasn't trying to get an adapter from them and then going out and buying my own filter making my own kit. I think if someone were to call K&N and ask them for a sticker, they would want a very good reason why they needed one and proof that they are entitled to one.

Besides that, obtaining a CARB sticker in whatever way you can for a KKM will not make the KKM "emissions legal". It could potentially open you up to an emissions fraud case if someone who knew what they were looking at wanted to push the issue (not very likely though).

So basically if you live in CA you better be running stock or K&N.
