Keep or sell????

2003 explorer limited, 139,000 miles. Have not had since new but for a couple of years now. I have replaced all the fluids, new tires, new shocks, new pads and rotors all around, also just replaced the servos for the tranny. Explorer is always garaged and in excellent condition. Probably wouldn't find one cleaner and shinier with this mileage.

Concern is my father is offering me a deal on his 2012 silver ado ext. cab 4x4. Only has 4,000 miles. I would have to pay for this truck for probably 5 years. Just trying to figure out if I should just keep the explorer or try to sell it, take the cash, payoff my existing load on another vehicle and then get the newer truck. I just bought an RV last fall so I am going to be doing some towing now. The explorer or new truck is a 3rd vehicle so it does not get driven a lot. Not sure what to do. Take the good deal on the silver ado but get into a payment for a while or just keep the explorer but always kind of worry because of the mileage even though it is running ok now.

So you are looking for financial advise? If you need a truck and it is a great deal, go for it. If it is just a spare vehicle like you say, why go into debt if you do not really need it?

Yeah I totally agree with what you said. Really why go into debt further if I do not absolutely need it. Was not really looking for financial advise just more concerned about the mileage and what people's thoughts were on the longevity. Always get concerned in the back of my head driving a vehicle with this many miles but then you always hear stories of people driving 300,000 miles on vehicles. I know one huge plus in my favor "at least I think" is I keep the explorer in the garage all the time so she just sits there waiting for when I need her. I keep my daily driver outside. This way in my mind I am preserving the explorer as best as I can. I don't know, sometimes I probably think and worry too much. Anyway those are my thoughts for now. Appreciate the input. Thanks.

Transmission just died in my 03 Limited (135k, as good as shape as they get for the year). I started by looking at 12k cars, and ended up looking at 18K-20k CPO 09-10 Edges. If I was going to buy a new car, I was going to buy something that was almost brand new and had a warranty. Wife/I just had a child, want to upgrade our home and enjoy no car payments - we are keeping it for a couple more years.



So I am having a Ford reman with 3yr warranty in it, and will keep it another 2-3 years. Alot cheaper than a 09-10 Edge!

Sounds like you have most of the mechanics covered pretty well with the Explorer. If it was me the tranny is less of a blow than the Silverado over 5 years. As far as my thinking paying cash for vehicles is the way to go it doesn't kick you in the pants when building wealth. Just my thoughts anyway.

If I found myself in your dilemma I would be pulling my hair out. The truck will tow your camp trailer much better than your Explorer will. And having a nice Explorer I wouldn't want to be parting ways with it. Yes you can replace a couple of transmissions way cheaper than what your payments will be, But the truck will handle a trailer much better, being wider and a longer wheelbase. You have a hard time turning an Explorer into a good tow vehicle.

If the Ex is a "spare" vehicle and the payments are $0, then I say keep it!!!

I agree with you but look at it a bit different. I listen to Dave Ramsey a lot and what comes to mind at the the stop light is he is either a millionaire or he is hoping to impress someone he will never meet with his high payment that he can't afford. There is a lot of old stuff a guy can buy that gets this job done of pulling a camper. My uncle lived in Portland where a person can do this but from 1973 he drove his 1969 Ford 3/4 ton 4X4 until 2003 when he passed away with cancer. There aren't many people that can do this in life but I think that is pretty cool! Financially it allowed him to travel and see a lot of things that people can't because a life time of car payments.

I feel the same way. My Explorer has 330,000 miles on it, mostly highway miles. Everything is original except engine which lasted almost 280,000 miles and rear diff which I had rebuilt about 10,000 miles ago. I'd like to have a camp trailer but I wouldn't tow it more than 4 or 5 times a year. But I enjoy not having payments more and I'm enjoying that everyday. I could have tranny rebuilt for 1700.00 by a local guy and maybe put lower gears front and rear and possibly tow okay for cheaper than a new or almost new F250 diesel. Besides you don't want a Chevy, right? Lol

I had an '04 FX4 extended cab pickup. I had 2 years left to pay on it. Payments were around $360 a month. Cash got tight, I sold the truck, paid off the loan, and went out and bought my mountaineer with cash. 6 months now without a truck payment really has saved me some serious financial headaches. I also realized I live on a farm and don't really need a truck. We have 3 farm trucks here I have access to when needed. Haven't had the need for one yet for personal use though.
