2002 Ford Explorer
Forgive me if this question has been asked. I did a search but could'nt quite hit the mark.
Today I went to the hardware store to have a key made. They told me it had a chip in it and they didn't have one. I'm a longtime Ford guy and the key I have looks like the same key I had for my older Fords that didn't have a chip. Please correct me, but does the 2002 Ford Explorer key have a chip in it? It's the XLS model and it doesn't have the key pad on the door or anything.
I took a picture of the existing key but not sure how to post it. Being a newbie maybe I can't post pics yet?

Welcome aboard!! :salute:

The key DOES have a chip in it. All new keys must have the chip and be programmed for your Ex. If you have 2 keys, then you can program them yourself. A maximum of 8 keys can be programmed.

This information is in the owner's manual. If you don't have an owner's manual, Dead Link Removed.

Ok thanks! Your right that's what it looks like. The one on the left. Bummer guess it's the expensive route then isn't it. Oh well.
Thanks again!

Wow you guys are fast! Didn't even see this in the owners manual, I'll look again. Bought it from the previous original owner but they only had the one key.
Wasn't bad for the price, just needs a little work.
Thanks!

Glad to help. ;)

A local locksmith may be cheaper than the dealer.

Ok I'll check into that and see what happens.
Not to change the subject but what's this I hear about the rear glass exploding? I've read up on it and is it common in all or does something cause it to happen?
Guess I can research the thread here to find out more.

the hinges break that hold the glass to the vehicle, causing the glass to shatter.
