if you put kick panels in, and you use a component system, then what do you guys do with that space where the speakers used to go? Just leave it blank? put something in there??? any ideas? if its just going to be empty space, I might just try to cut a plate to mount a component kit in the door.

You either use the 5x7 spots to mount some speakers for fill or keep it blank. One thing to point out though, the design of the kickpanel boxes for the Explorer might necessitate the removal of the parking brake pedal. Also, I know they'd get in my way a lot the way I sit when I drive. But to each his own!

I just got some components and am going to make a plywood plate to mount them in the stock location in the door. It won't be as good as some other options, but it's easy, cheap, and stealthy.

i have 5 1/4s in my kickpanels and 6X8's in the doors.

the parking brake doesnt have to be removed, just bent slightly. i drive an explorer with a manual transmission and the kickpanels never get in my way. i was worried about it at first and i was afraid of water, dirt, or mud ruining my speakers. but it's rare that anything ever reaches the speaker grills. and when i pop off the grilles, the speakers are still totally clean. they look brand new.
