KKM Filter Install Problems!

First. Let me start by saying "Yes, I DID DO A SEARCH, before posting this question ;-) (I say this because I sometimes ask this of folks who ask questions in my forum, that have been answered many times before).

Also I'm not complaining because the price was right ($50 off gift cert. won at Truckhaven 2001). But...

Has anyone else had trouble getting the KKM filter to fit in the designated space on early Ex's (have a '93)?? Mine hits the power (fuse and relay) box on one side and the air conditioner accumulator on the other side. The paperwork that came with states that its for the 91-94's. and YES, I did remove the old airbox as instructed. ;-). I've had to try to jury rig the element to the MAS housing adapter with a 3" plumbing drainpipe 45° fitting to get to nest in straighter, but then the MAS wiring harness isn't long enough to plug in. #*%*@

BTW, I've had my AC converted to R??? (the new stuff) a couple years back, I can't remember the old accumulator, but this new one may be a bit larger, and located slightly more to the right. It's been a real fight lately to get the air box open to clean the K&N.

Any help would or constructive advice wouild be greatly appreciated! Or, I can just go back to the drilled airbox and K&N. :=(

If I remember correctly, some members with early Explorers have relocated their battery to yeild an intake setup similar to 95+ X's. The battery is relocated to the other side (and the fluid tanks relocated) or somewhere else with space. Dunno, might be an idea....

Yeah, that's a possibility (relo the batt) but then I'd also have to relo the Rancho shock control.air compressor, the air manifold from the other on board air system, the ARB solonoid for the front locker, and... There isn't an unused square inch under my hood with all the extra light and compressor relays, extra fuse panels, winch, radio, compressor wiring, air lines, yada yada... I'm really starting to like the idea of back to the drilled airbox and K&N. I'm not really into a major under hood reorg.

Thanks for the constructive suggestion though, and it probably would have been the way to go a few years, back as I was just getting into the mod craze.

Hmmm, with all that stuff working under the hood, you're probably better off with the swiss cheese airbox anyway. That way your filter will get some extra protection from all your "stuff" and might actually get cooler air.

Ray, I think mine didn't quite fit right in there either... actually right now its not even held on by bolts, think thats ok? .

Mine rubs against my fuse box also. I have had it on for 2 years now and no problems. I putt some black electrical tape on the fuse box and a cussion and it has rubbed through it only recently. I just simply put some more on. On the other side the cleaner does not hit any part of the A/C. It is very snug but very do able. Let it rub man. By the time it rubs enough to do anything you will probabally be ready to put a V-8 in

Ray, mine is the same way. Just touches the fuse box, but I dont have any problems with the A/C side. I put a bumper of electrical tape where the filter hits the fuse box and have no problems.

I'd like to thank everyone for the suggestions and info. Finding out that I wasn't the only one that had similar difficulties encouraged me to press on with the project!

Made a new mounting bracket out of a "Simpson" building framing angle bracket, and an extension to the air plenum out of 3" drainpipe and a 45° pvc elbow. This brought the air cleaner element around and back enough so that the wiring harness reaches, and the element doesn't rub on anything! A sano install, if I do say so

Did a test run down to the Anza Borrego Desert today {near Truckhaven), and I works great!

Mine also rubs on the fuse box. I just placed some foam strips between it to prevent too much rubbing..

eh

even better..get the conical K&N precleaner (fits both the K&N and KKM cone filters) and it provides the cushion for the fuse box and all that AND keeps out more dirt..just a suggestion.
