KKM Installation

How do you remove the bottom portion of the stock air box on a 99? I got the KKM on, but I can't see any screws to remove the bottom of the air box.

Pull & tug on it.. Its being held in by rubber mounts.

The rubber mounts aren't the hard part, though - there's some sort of connector into the fender area that is a b!tch to get out - so much that i ended up breaking the airbox when i did it.

You really have to pull on it; its on harder than you can imagine.

Yea i had a hard time removing the damn thing its in there good i thought it was screwed in at first...i kinda gave it a winggle when i was pulling and it made it easier.

I just did my KKM and left the bottom section in. Emailed KKM ask them about leaving it in and they said as long as the filter itself was not rubbing it and you have clearance all around it was ok. The adapter on mine sits on the edge of the old airbox so I'm leaving it. The KKM filter sits above and partially in side the box.I have a 2001 explorer sport.

I used a flat screwdriver and slipped it underneath the box and between the metal mounting plate. I had the hand toward the center of the vehicle and the screwdriver pointing outwards. Then a little prying action and the bottom popped out and then I pulled it sideways to release the side grommets.

Yep. Screwdriver is the tool to use. I used 2 myself. One next to each rubber grommet. That and some baby muscle.
