KKM intake question

I am thinking about buying a KKM intake and was woundering if anyone has had any problems with them. My main concern is there is no place to hook up the bimetal sensor that is on the top of the factory filter housing. I'm not sure how important it is or what it even does. Also by not using the factory intake ducting the engine doesn't get the heated air from the hot air cold air sensor. I guess my main question is has anyone had any major problems not having these hooked up? Or how important are they?

I have not had any problems with the kkm kit, except the state of california wouldn't allow me to pass smog with it on. They said it was as a result of me tampering with the vacum lines. I am not completly sold on the kit though. I have had it for over a year. It does help out quite a bit on the top end, however the low end has suffered immensly due to the filter sucking in all of the hot engine air. I had to hook up my old air box to pass smog and I am not really all that anxious to put the kkm back on. if you look at the k&n kits they have special walls and seals that seperate the filter from the rest of the engine compartment; thus ensuring that only cold air is drawn in. Four wheeler even did an article of the two on their project mpg. they stayed with the stock airbox. Just my .02 cents.

I haven't had my KKM for very long so I have not been able to get the emissions done on it yet. But I kept my bymetal sensor and just attached it to the firewall. You may consider doing something like that. Then you won't have a vacuum leak. (just my .02 worth) Dead Link Removed

i had the kkm for about 4 months and wasn't too impressed. it didnt supply the power like i wanted. i came across a k&n filter charger for free...we wont mention how hehehe
but i was MUCH more impressed with it. it provided more horses and passing is a breeze now!!

In what issue of Four Wheeler did you see this writeup regarding the comparison of the k&n and kkm air filter systems and then staying with the stock airbox? I looked through some of the recent year 2000 issues and could not find the article. You referred to it as the mpg project. Thanks for the help. Mike P 91 XLT

I don't know exactly what issue it was in. I just moved and threw out all of my old issues. It was a three or four part story. Meaning it was in three or four different issues. You can E mail fourwheeler at www.fourwheeler.com and ask them about it. It was called Project MPG and the test truck was a 1 ton dually ford pickup. They did a whole write up on different air intakes. They found that a cold air induction yielded more horsepower and torque than the k&n conical air filter. They did stick with their K&n panel filter though. Hope this helps. Oh yeah I did have my vacume line plugged as the instructions said. But in California in order to smog your vehicle you are not allowed to tamper with the air intake system.

Thanks for all the imput. I did order one and am working on developing a system that uses the KKM and some custom parts to allow me to use the vaccum lines and the hot air riser. Also I am working on a shroud that seal to the hood and put and air scoop on it so I can still get the cold air. I am also working up a design that will allow me it remove the scoop and replace it with a snorkle. I will let you all know when I'm finished with it.
