KKM is making my engine run warmer

I just installed the KKM setup on Friday. Coupled with my Flowmaster and free flow cat, my exhaust sounds even louder. It's awesome; however, my engine is running warmer than usual. Normally, my temp gauge stays around the C and touches that normal line. After putting in the KKM, the needle is slightly pass the normal line on highway driving - in city driving, its between the N and O in normal. Is this normal for you guys.

The temperature in NY is currently mid 60's and if its running this high already, what am I going to do when the weather starts hitting the 90's?

Did you reset your computer? If you did not then you are probably running little lean. Running lean increases combustion temperatures. Just pull out the blue 60 amp fuse under the hood for a few minuetes, it is easier than disconnecting the battery.

I removed the negative battery terminal as stated in the instructions and just to make sure, I removed it once more last night. However, I am still running hotter than before.

Mike-I also have a '91 and I also installed a larger capacity radiator-three row all-aluminum replacing the single row plastic/aluminum OE. I run consistantly around O one the temp gauge going no higher than R.

I just ordered my KKM set-up and it will be arriving on Thursday May 20th. Please let me know if it's going to be a bad idea to install this in my Explorer. I wanted a little better sound, power and mileage. Do you all think I am going to get this out of the KKM set-up?

I just installed the KKM on my 95 last week. I think I can feel more power, but don't really notice a sound difference and don't really check the mileage either. I am putting a DynoMax Ultra Flow on this weekend and then a Jet Powertech module next. I haven't seen any temperature increase with the KKM, but it's been cold up here in Seattle!

I can't comment on the KKM but I can comment on engine temperature. Before I replaced the thermostat in January, the gauge never got above the 'N' and the heater was lame. After replacing the stat, the needle immediately went to the exact middle of the range, i.e. 12 o'clock, and the heater will now run you out of the car. Obviously my thermostat was stuck wide open.

This past weekend I had it out wheeling in the desert, ambient temperature of 90°, under heavy load (in 4 low, with 5 people and full spate of camping gear, 10 gal of water, going slowly over gnarly obstacles, with the A/C on) and the gauge went a little above the 12 o'clock position.

I suggest you change your thermostat and see what happens. Make sure you use a good quality 195° stat. Hope this helps.

I wound up replacing my thermostat last Friday, after all I already had ordered it months back. My old thermostat was not working properly and was probably stuck open. Thats why I had such low temperatures for the 2 years I've owned my truck. I am going to miss that thermostat b/c now I have to run at "normal" temp.
The one good thing that came out of it though is that my exp warms up much faster and I will be having heat in the upcoming winter. (JET 180 degree).
(NOTE: You don't have to take off the belts and other accesories just to change the STAT as I have seen on other sites. "You just have to know how to manuever you fingers.")

KKM Set-Up

I installed my KKM last week and I have had no Heating Troubles. The sound is awesome but I have noticed at 1800 rpm the intake makes a high pitched noise.....then when I rev up to 2300 rpm it goes away and gives me the GOOD tough engine sound I like.
Anyone else have this problem?

I am not sure if your setup is the same as in the 91; however, we have two hoses attached to the stock airbox. When you take the airbox out, one of the hoses is removed. The one remaining hose needs to be "plugged up" with the plug provided by KKM. Did you plug the hose if applicable on your exp?
