kkm (or k&n) w/o other mods....why bother?!

warranty's up...time to begin mods. however...

my (trusted?) mechanic says don't waste my time getting a kkm intake if i don't ALSO change my computer's setting or get a better exhaust. i.e... no where for extra air coming in to go?

is this true. i have read lots of links here about the benefit of adding kkm intakes, but those of you that have them...is the added performance only b/c you have exhausts and/or chips?

p.s. i know they make better sound, but i can drill my box for the same effect!

With just the KKM, I've gotten better throttle response and gas mileage. I'm still going to get an exhaust, the exhaust will just help MORE.

Its always a good idea to reset after an addition.

You should unplut the negative side of the battery when you are installing the intake, when you plug it back in, the computer will reset itself

If it makes a difference after you install it its because your old one was probably covered with mud or at least very dirty. My air filter element was bran new when i came across this site and everyone spoke highly of the KKM so i purchased it.

The only difference i noticed was the sound coming from my engine. If you are getting this filter for performance gains dont bother. But if you are getting it becuase you want a differnt sound coming from your engine and you want a filter that is easy to clean and reusable then that is the reason to get it.

I disagree. I got a definate seat of the pants improvement as well as a good increase in MPG.

Like i said .... your filter must have been dirty as hell. My filter was BRAN NEW when i had it replaced with the KKM and i saw nothing but the growl. Trust me i love to exadurate stories and make thigs seem 100 times more exiting than it originally was. But not when someone is going to be spending money on something.

Now if you already have aftermarket exhaust and your bottleneck in the system is your airbox then yes you will notice a difference. But if you have a factory exhaust setup like i have the pressure will not be exiting out of the exhaust any faster than it is now because the bottleneck will be in the exhaust somewhere.

I was seriously be interested in drag run times with and without the KKM on the same truck with stock exhaust.

And if i remember correctly Aldive is the one who claims around 30 mpg with his explorer where everyone else ranges from 13-17 mpg.

I am in no way saying the KKM is a bad product. I like mine alot. Its easy to clean it looks cool but your not going to be leaving 20 foot long patches of rubber behind your truck as your leaving a stop sign if that is your only mod. that is my point.

Actually it was a brand new K & N drop in filter.

And the mileage was definately helped with the addition of the KKM. Dead Link Removed

Mine was only about 500 miles old when I put the KKM in. My gas mileage jumped from 17 t0 21! Much better throttle response and well worth the money

Also where in RI are you located? Do you know of any places around southeast MA or RI where I can find a 99-01 bumper with the chrome cutouts for the round foglights?

my problem is i am a lazy. If i spell something wrong ... oh well who cares you knew what i meant anyway. When i am talking to someone and i see that i can skip a few words and still get my point across i will do that too. Lazy American Way .... isnt it great.

Keep in mind that you have to start somewhere, you will notice a difference enough to make you happy that you did buy the intake, either in sound or placebo horse power gains...haha (I did and it was my first mod).

Then you can add some exhaust later, then a 66mm throttlebody; then a high flow cat, then a Super Charger, then cam, then crash and **** or go blind, whatever.

Buy it, you'll like it!

I agree with 99explorer 5.0 about the intake thing, I noticed no power increase when I changed my intake around and put a high-flow filter on it. It just made it a little louder.
