I have the same year u have, i went with the KKM deff worth the money, the sound you get from it is great!!!! not to sure about milage though, kinda have a problem with punching it to hear the motor rumble, but my milage hasnt suffered too much from punching.
I used an adapter for the MAF and got a round K&N filter. I used the MAF from my 1995 Mustang GT which has the same flange as an Explorer. I also used the adapter from my Powerdyne supercharger on it as well. This adapter could easily be made. Its a flat plate with the four mounting holes to match up to the MAF, and a large hole in the center of course. It also has a ring on it for the filter to clamp on. The combo of bigger MAF and the K&N filter made the biggest differance on my 4.0 of all the mods I have done.
I say try the swiss cheese method first. If you don't like it, then spend the money and get the KKM. I've been running the modified airbox in my '91XLT with a K&N drop in and it runs well with the Borla headers, Ultra-flo SS muffler and the Super converter. I have over 165k on my '91.
Well I broke down and spent the money for the kkm. Not a whole lot to it for something that cost $90 (I'm Cheap!), but it sounds great, and so far I've gain +1.5mpg on the highway w/AC on. Hopefully I'll gain some more but I can't keep my foot out of it Thanks for your help
