My friend's '97(?) Sport with the SOHC engine has a prob that the mechs can't figure out. When he stops, the motor feels like it "drops" an inch or two. Or maybe "rolls" forward just prior to 0 mph. He's had the tranny checked, the mounts, brakes were just done, etc. Nobody can figure out what it is. Anyone experience this?

Does it klunk when you take off as well?

my old lumina use to do this same thing...something about rusted bolts somewhere. it was on a recall..i never got it fixed though as i bought my X :) i would definately recommend getting it looked at though. in the thing that chevy sent me it said the whole engine could possibly fall out

It's your driveshaft slip yokes. Have them greased. A search would have yielded the same information.

As Jason said, it's your rear driveshaft slip yoke. It should be lubricated every 10K miles for "Normal Duty" or every 6K for "Severe Duty". My personal experience is that mine needs to be lubricated every 30K befor I get the "clunk". My local Ford dealer tore my front end completely apart the first time I ran ino it before they dscovered it as my slip yoke.

Where is the slip yoke?

Mine started clunking for about a week, then the ujoints started squeaking and the clunking stopped. I had the ujoints replaced, and the slip yokes are fine, just had to grease them.

i have a clunk right under my left foot it seems whenever i take off from a stop or a slow roll... is this also the slip yoke or whatever your talking about?

I have the same problem, but the ford dealer says they cant be greased!!! They even showed me how it cant be removed and there is NO grease fittings or somthing?

My problem is, i still have the truck under warrenty and cant do work my self in fear of them taking it away! ;)

I would find another Ford dealer ASAP!!! You don't use grease fittings to lube them, you basically have to separate the driveshaft in two. But if you prefer to do it yourself, it's not too tough.

JASON25

Just wanted to thank you for that bit of info, mine too clunks and I had no idea from where. That's what I like about this board, if you read long enough, someone will have the answer.:D

Your slip yoke is at the front end of your rear driveshaft. To lubricate it, you remove the two one time use metal clamps from the 6" long black rubber seal that covers it. Next remove the bolts that hold the rear of the driveshaft to the differential flange. Drop the rear down and pull the driveshaft out of the transfer case. The splined end under the rubber seal is your slip yoke. Smear some white lithium grease all over the splines and put everything back together. When I did mine the first time, I used metal hose clamps in place of the one time use clamps put on by Ford so that I could reuse them over and over again. Don't let your Ford dealer tell you it can't be lubricated. It is listed in the Maintenance Guide under routine maintenance and if not done will result in a a "clunking" sensation when coming to a complete stop or just starting out.

Jason, ive taken my X to two Dealers and one Mech shop and all say the same thing! They say there is no fittings for the greasing?!

Like i said above, cant do work my self because of warrenty.

Have your dealer remove this rubber boot and smear some grease on what he finds underneith (that is the slip yoke). There are no grease fittings on it. They have to remove the rubber boot and put grease on the end of the driveshaft.

You can do this yourself (if you are mechanically inclined). This will in no way void your warranty. It is listed in the Mainenance Booklet that came with your Explorer when it was purchased new.

Your clunk is probably the radius arm bushings. Someday I'll get mine fixed too.

It wouldn't be for him because he has no radius arm bushings. 95+ have SLA suspension with torsion bars.

I honestly couldn't tell you exactly what it is, but it could never hurt to grease the slip yokes.

I have that clunk too. I also have a popping sound when my front suspension rebounds quickly, and clues to what it could be?
