I have a 2000 Ex Sport and I've noticed lately that when I drive around town for a while and hit a few bumps (some can also be called bunkers) I hear a knocking sound coming from the front end when I slow down to stop and again upon takeoff. I don't hear it while driving but I'm sure it's still the but I can't hear it.

What could this be? I was thinking of changing the front shocks one of these weekends and I think it might be a good idea sooner than later. What are the tell tale signs that you need new shocks? Simply a rough ride?

Thanks for all the input guy... LOVE this site. I wish I was as technical and handy as half of you :)

Lower ball joints, common problem on Explorers, and my guess is yours are on the way out.
