Are there any good trails in Las Vegas area? I'll be there for a few days and might have time check out some nearby trails. Nothing too hard core. I've got a 97 Explorer with 31" BFGs and the TT and shackle lift.

What about Sedona and Grand Canyon? I'll be there, too. Any recommendations on trails?

I haven't done any of them, but Lake Mead NRA lists some backroads and 4x4 trails. The BLM also lists a couple of back country byways in the area, too. Are any of these any good? I haven't run any, but I've wanted to when I get to Vegas.

I can't remember the name (#) of the highway that runs through vegas n. to s. (is it the 25?) anyway... if you stay on that Highway and go 5-10 miles North of Vegas (past the exits for Nellis Air Force Base); there is a HUGE off roading area on the right side (E.) with dunes, rocks, and tons of trails. Now that I have been to TruckHaven; it is really similar. I had a blast out there. If you can look up 'Vegas Valley Offroaders' or 'wheelers' they are the guys I went with, and they gave me lots of help. Hope this helps ya.
Sedona has the Broken Arrow Trail that GJarret's got some awesome photos of, so that might be cool too.

Wheelin Sedona

ell you the best trails in the area that your X is capable of doing. Do yourself a HUGE favor and post the dates you will be in Vegas and Sedona. Instead of just directions , you might get 2or3 new friends to wheel with. A group of 2,3or4 trucks is alot more FUN and safer than going it alone. You gonna be on a family vacation? And yes my Bro's pictures of Sedona are awesome aren't they, they were taken on a trip to Phoenix to wheel with Rick. You never know, if the stars above are aligned just right you might get a visit from the GREAT PUMPKIN but I do know you wont if you dont ask.

Herc's former copilot :(

Thanks MrShorty, becker69 and AspenX.

Yeah, this trip will be a vacation for me and my wife. We leave from San Diego this Friday, Aug 1st.

Here's the plan so far
8/1 - 8/3 Las Vegas
8/4 - 8/5 Hualapai Indian Reseravation (Colarado River rafting)
8/6 & 8/7(?) Sedona
8/8 - 8/10 Grand Canyon South rim
8/11 drive back to San Diego.

Most likely I'll have some time to myself (the wife will be busy) on Saturday 8/2 in Vegas. So if anyone will be up there that wants to meet and explore the Lake Meade NRA area or other places nearby then let me know.

As far as Sedona goes, I haven't decided if I'll be there for 2 nights or just one. I might add a night to the south rim of the grand canyon. So I plan on being there on Wednesday 8/6 and stay for possibly 2 nights. Again, if anyone wants to meet please let me know. Since this will be a vacataion trip I don't want to do any runs that will be too dificult that I might break something on the Explorer. Do you think Broken Arrow would be okay to run with my rig? In Sedona area I want to spend some time out on the trail taking pictures. Probably around dusk would be a good time while the sun sets and the light changes the color of the rocks.

AspenX where are the pics of your bro's Sedona trip? Did he write a trip report?

becker69, the highway through Las Vegas is interstate 15. I'll do a search for the Las Vegas Wheelers and see what I can find.

Thanks everyone!

-Mark

Herc tour report

Very long trip report. its alot more than just Sedona. Do a search, on the left where it says keyword put herc tour on the right for who type gjarrett kick back and enjoy! I sure wish I had gotten to copilot that trip:(

I found the Arizona Backcountry Adventures book locally last week. Thanks, Ken. I also got the Sothern Calif. version, too. I haven't found the second book locally so I'll try and pick it up in Arizona since I don't have time to order it.

In Sedona, the Borken Arrow Trail looks like fun. I'll try that one. Also Soldier Pass Road is a short and sceninc run that I might try.

Sedona is extremely scenic. I wanted to travel the trails there the last time we were there, but it was during my Honeymoon, and Suzanne wouldn't tolerate me scratching her Jeep! LOL...
