After pulling off the beach is deep, soft sand, my 91 Navajo (133K miles) starting leaking power steering fluid onto the area around the transfer case. Originially I thought it was tranny fluid but later found out it wasnt. The mechanic told me that the high pressure hose is "rusted" and the plasting casing for the fluid is cracked.

I drove it about 100 miles since then without further leaking.

Anyone ever have this type of problem and if actually these things need replacement, what should it cost/how hard to do myself?

Thanks!

had the same problem with my X. the resivoir had a crack in it. cost me about 20 bucks and an hour to put the new resivoir in. for the high pressure line i didnt have to replace it but when i looked it i had no idea if it needed replacing or not so i just went ahead and did that to.

Welcome to the site. We hope you stay aboard to learn more about the Explorer family!

It's very possible. The lines can rust, and if you're in a salt water enviorment then even more so. It's really not a hard job if you have some basic hand tools and can find your way around the garage.
