maybe my experience will help someone with a similar problem.

I had suspected one of the roof rack screws had been leaking on my '00 Mountaineer. after removing the rack, to strip and repaint it, i put sealant on the screws and assumed that would fix the problem. we'll, it's been pouring rain in GA for the past week and i found i had collected about a pint of water on my rear cargo mat. so, is the problem the roof rack or the rear side window?

i first took the roof rack loose, on the offending side, and covered the screw holes with electrical tape. still got a lot of water on the cargo mat by the next day. i figured it had to be the window and i know they are held in with nuts on studs. i planned on pulling the window out at some point in the future and resealing it, but for a quick test/fix i put a piece of electical tape across the entire top edge of the window. no more leak... problem solved (temporairilly).

today is a nice day, so i figured i'd remove the rear trim panel in preparation for removing the window. turned out it wasn't necessary to remove the entire panel, just took it loose at the top and rear. what i found was that all the nuts that keep the window pressed agains the cabin were so loose i could turn them in with my fingers. i took a 9mm wrench and tightened them up pretty snug (top and sides) and then ran a hose over the window for 5 minutes... no more leak!

tip: some of the best advice i ever got, "do not overtighten"
