is it possible to change the bearing in the hub or do you have to buy the entire hub assembly? Just the bearing is much cheaper and then I can get a better quality bearing

just checked at Rockauto.com and they have rear bearings for $66. It's not clear whether bearing only or with hub. "BCA/NATIONAL Part # 516008"
Is this the wrong part? too cheap?

the fronts should b hub and bearing assembly. bolt in. and the rears are bearings only have to remove the entire spindle and press them out and in. b careful not to bend the spindle. and watch out for the parking brake also

I'm concerned that this may be my problem, but the sound is pretty consistent throughout driving speed (30-up), no difference in turning. I describe the sound as the way a car sounds going over a draw bridge or on heavily grooved pavement.

If i raise the wheel, I don't quite understand the 12 and 6 for check. Am I looking for any loose play? what would be considered loose play? > 1/2"

by checking at 12 and 6 your checking for play. actually any play is bad. might want to check your carrier bearing in the rear also as they have a tendency to go bad also. if they go bad you have to drop the rear housing to replace. sometimes it is hard to tell which is which. it can def drive you nuts! when checking at 12 and 6 you pull toward you at one 6 and push at 12 at the same time and vice versa. just like checking ball joints. sometimes the only way is pulling it apart and checking for roughness. good luck!

30 MM.
I just changed my left front on my 02 XLT because when I would make a slight turn to the right at 40mph or over, the hum would get worse. The new left front bearing assy. did not fix my problem.

After changing my front left bearing assy. and it not fixing my rumbling sound, I jacked up the rear of the vehicle and found my left rear bearings shot, lots of movement. I guess in hind sight, I should have checked all four tires for play rather than assuming it was the left front just because that is where it sounded like it was coming from and increased in sound when slightly turning to the right.

I am going to buy front wheel bearing assemblies for my 2003 explorer AWD. My question is can I use the old sensor cables or do I have to buy the assemblies with the attached sensor cable? Thanks

Front end hum

To my knowledge, the assy comes with the sensor and harness. I checked with Napa and Auto Zone and the only option was with sensor & harness.

rockauto.com sells one without the sensor for $116.00 delivered. The part # is SP470201, the one with the sensor is SP470200. but its about $16.00 per hub higher, but if I could use the old sensor I can save about $30.00.

im currently in the middle of replacing my front left hub assembly. just wondering if there is an easier way of getting the three 15mm hub bolts off. I dont have room back there to squeeze a swivel impact socket inbetween the bolt and the round end of the axle. any tips. i managed to get two of the bolts off by wrench and it was extremely difficult to get even the wrench in there and i barely had the leverage to get those two off. (those damn things are a pain to get out by hand) any tips would be great. also is there any torque specs for the axle nut and the hub bolts. thanks
Matt

I have read all the previous posts and can relate to the "humming" noise, the disappearing or getting worse when turning right or left. I also replaced my left front bearing. (I have 4 wheel ABS, so my new hub came with the ABS cable. If you have 2 wheel ABS, you can get the bearing without the cable - $10 cheaper.) The "hum" actually got worse after I replaced the wheel bearing! I then jacked it up and started looking for other possible problems/sources. I found that the nut was missing on one of the two bolts that holds the front axle to the truck!! I fixed that little issue and the hum was reduced significantly but did not go away. I'm definitely going to try the stethascope thing. If it is the rear bearing, it sounds like it's not something I can fix in the driveway. Right?
