A little over 3 weeks ago there has been a whoop whoop noise coming from the front end of my 99 Sport 4x4 which I bought used . I had it into the dealer and they replaced the dust covers ,machined the rotors and installed new brake pads , replaced the wheel bearing hub (new)(they never charged me) It is rotational and goes with the vehicle speed. Except at high speeds you can't really hear it . But here is the kicker. If I let off the gas it quiets down alot. As soon as I even touch the gas it is back. You can't really hear it outside the vehicle. The tires are 20% worn, all bushings and ball joints are fine. Could it be in the transfer case or a CV Joint? It has them puzzled and me frustrated.........Thanks for your help ...........Jim (They might just be getting it back)

Describe the noise better...

noise left frount

I have a noise that sounds like a thump but, it is rate of thumps is in accordance with the speed of the SUV. It's hard to here at high speeds (50+). but I think it may be the u joint it gets much worst in 4 wheel drive it's much louder. I here it in reverse to. It does not matter whether I start slow or jump on it. I still get the noise. I know it's not coming from my motor but,a lifter knock is a good description of the sound.:exp:

ha...my moms 96 does that too...... it kinda sounds like a lifter knock.... but i dont think it is that.. maybe a shockload to the speedometer cable.... it only does it when i hop back on the gas after coasting

Sorry I forgot to describe the noise. It is as best the way that I can describe it a whoop-whoop-whoop noise. ..Jim

jim, kinda like something is out of round huh?

Almost like that. The tires as I said are almost new and have been checked at the tire shop and are fine, They thought it was the bearing on the left and replaced that but to no avail.

I have a 93 that started making a front end noise similar to what you described and it turns out the auto hubs are bad. On mine, if I turn on 4x4 and drive forward, then turn it off the noise goes away. It kept getting worse and worse. How many miles?

roughly 112,000. I appreciate the help. I will have to get them to check the auto hubs while I am there. No matter what I am in it will still make the noise. auto,4h or 4l. The part that gets me is that it goes away when I take my foot off the gas but I can hear it slow down when I apply the brakes. I am sure glad they are paying for it....Jim

noise frount-end

Well for those of you who have this problem mine just got 100 times louder and now if I try to go over 50 mph it just shake like I am in an earthquake. I don't know how much play you have in you drive shaft but, mine can be moved by hand. and on the drive shaft there is a fresh metal grind spot just above my rear universal joint (which) is where the excessive play is. It may be that the rear ujoint has gone bad and your drive shaft is hitting the chassis.

Please let me know if any of you find a fresh spot of clean metal on your drive shaft near the rear, or you have excessive play in the rear ujoint.
