5.0 Explorers and Mountys are pretty damn quick when stock, and all other 5.0 Explorers and Mountys I've been in are as quicks as ours, they could be easily considered sleepers as a lot of peple don't know how quick they are. They don't relize that the 5.0 has a crap load of low end torque and with 3.73 gears they fly for a heavy suv.

Some, like Darkfox (just messin with you dark) have 5.0's that run like dogs, you'll stand a better chance against theirs;) :D

Or, if ya wanna get burned harder, run against an 02' Explorer or Mounty with a 4.6 V8. My neighbors
02' 2wd 4.6 Explorer with 3.73 gears ran a 15.7 at the track stock. He destroys our 5.0 off the line and at any speed. To the people who think the 4.6 modular engines don't have good low-end, trust me, they have awsome low-end power that's better if not equal to the 5.0

The 4.6 Litre in the X is probably cammed for more torque.

Oh yes, I am quite familiar with the quickness of the new Mountys and Explorers.....tried keeping up with one on some curvy roads out by my house- not even close, heh heh

I know thats why I'm getting an 02'-03' Mounty with the 4.6, I gave up on trying to find a Mineral Grey one. We're looking for like an 03' 4.6 Mounty with the luxury package and in Silver Frost, looks sweet in that color. And also b/c theres allready a immense amount of aftermarket performance parts and other stuff for it, and look at how long it took for some companies to develop things for the other Explorers.

Ya, they handle awsome for a heavy suv, as well as most cars. I love driving my neighbors, I can throw it into turns/curves I wouldn't even think of doing with our 5.0 Mounty or Explorer both with Edelbrock shocks. Plus the 4.6 hauls and sounds like a Mustang when driving, you actually get a nice shove to the seat when you gun it. Amazing considering they way a couple hundred more pounds then the 2nd gen Explorer.

Yes, I would be interested in seeing how the new Explorers/Mountys drive. Rather disappointing that the other model years got prett much ignored by the aftermarket...dumb Firestone scandal....
anybody know how the 5.4L stacks up against the 4.6? Not too long ago we got a new F-150 Lariat with the Trition 5.4L- it feels slower than it should be to me...maybe its just me though...

The Triton 5.4 is tuned for awsome low-end torque, but your also in a very heavy truck.

Get some 40 series flowmasters or magnaflows on, the 5.4 sounds awsome with a custom exhaust, it's got a high-tec burble to it.

The 5.4 is more of a truck engine with awsome low-end, I thought my cousins 5.4 Crew Cab F-150 was fast for it's size, but thats about it unless you get a Lightning for pure speed.

The 4.6 sohc in the Explorer/Mountaineer is based off the Romeo block used in later Mustangs, they stopped using the windsor based 4.6 in I think 00'. It's basically just a detuned GT engine. And it's matched perfectly to the new 5 speed auto, keeps the engine in the powerband when you floor it and is about the smoothest shifting trans I've driven.

The 4.6 dohc in the Aviator is based off the Cobra engine and is basically the same engine in the Marauder and 03' Mach 1.

The only engine thats in a Lexus that can be considered slow is the 3.0 liter V6 found in the ES300 and the RX300. That'll be changed in 2004 when the ES330 and RX330 are due out, both with around 250hp, with an all new very refined 3.3 liter engine. The new RX330 looks fantastic too with a very BMW X5ish stance.

Actually, its a common misconception about the ES300, its only 20% a Camry. When you drive the two back to back (at least the new ones) they are totally different cars, the ES is a lot smoother and more refined, in fact, its almost as smooth and as refined as my LS400 which was nearly twice the price. Plus with the Lexus you get the brand prestige, the service and the longer warranty, plus variable valve timing in the engine which the Camry doesnt have. My son is looking at one of these, and I get them as loaners, its a really really nice car for what it is, but it is sluggish. The new engine is needed badly.

1995 Lexus LS400
Weight: 3650 lbs.
Base Engine Type: V8 / 4 liter
Horsepower: 260 hp
Torque: 270 ft-lbs.

Mine's a 98 with a weight around 3750, 290hp and 300ft-lbs. It'll do 0-60 in 6.3 seconds and do a 1/4 mile of around 14.6 right out of the box. I've seen LS400s like mine do sub 14 second 1/4s with very very little modification. I actually prefer the way my car drives to the way the LS430 does, the throttle on the LS430 is a little heavier, a little more german, and I think it makes the car feel sluggish, doesn't feel as quick as my 400 to me. Plus the 430 is limited at 135, where my 400 is limited at 149, and yes I have tested that ;)

Its a fantastic car, I can't say enough about it. Probably will replace it with a new 430 when the time comes.
