I have a 92 XLT, 4x4 with about 6k on a completely rebuilt engine. Valvoline 10w40 full synthetic oil. When she sets for a couple of days, the lifters lose prime and she clicks for a few seconds on start-up. This only seems to happen after being idle for several days. Does anyone know of a remedy?

Thanks!

Run it more often?
You could remove the valve covers and pre-lube. You could also pull the ignition and use the starter to prime the system.

I am from the uk and as you know we speak almost another language, what is a lifter?
I think you are talking about tappets?
If that is the case you may have a blocked oil feed, has the car always had 10-40?

you may want to try 5-30 instead.
I had another car not an Explorer before and put 20-40 in.............it did just that as it was too thick when cold to get around quick and too thick when hot to lubricate properly, after a few days I used an engine flush and changed the oil for a lower viscosity and she was silent again!

I hope this helps you mate, please let us know what happens in the fix.

I can tell you that a can of Engine Restore completely solved my lifter noise on start-up...I highly recommend it.:us:

You should definitely switch to using 5W-30, which is spec'd for the 4.0 V6 due to ease of starting, and so the oil is sure to get into the lifter/pushrod areas, among other things. 10W-40 might be ok if you were in an intensely hot climate or in a engine that saw constant heavy duty work use, but it just sucks more gas and makes for harder starting in a daily driver.

:)Thanks for the tip on 5-30 oil. I did a complete rebuild about 6K ago, so I don't think any flushing, etc. is needed. I'll try the 5-30 oil and see if that helps. Thanks again.

i have seen it before where the synthetic oil was the cause of the clicking
