thank you for your reply.no i havent done an oil pressure check &the oil was 10 30.how ever if the oil pump was weak wouldn't you think the rod &main bearings would be makeing noise at 2000 rpm at curb idle and they are quiet i am an experinced auto mech i am retired now. i find this one real strange but your right stick with the basics istead of trying to annalize things

Welcome Yarktown.
That sounds like an oil starvation problem to me.
Maybe a clogged oil pump pick-up screen....?

You really need to get a true oil pressure
reading to correctly diagnose this. If the screen
is partially clogged, enough oil can flow to lube
the bearings but still starve the lifters.

thanks for the info.is there any thing i can do to clean the screen with out pulling the oil pan.i tryed mystrey oil when i first got it for about 1000 miles it helped a little bit. i was thinking about putting an ounce of kerosene in the oil is there anything out there that will help thanks dan

i finely did an oil pressure test these are the results warmed up at 2000 rpm 55 psi. at start up on cold idle 60 psi. i am running 5/20 with a 8oz of sea foam for about 50 miles it still does the same thing except there a little bit quieter . do you think i should put the rest of the can in and keep running it to see what happens thanks dan i want to thank runnen on emty i hope he reads this message to. millage on motor 137000

Dan, since the lifters are a little bit quieter, then they are
probably gummed up a bit, and what you're doing with the
SeaFoam and MMO is good. I'd continue running the cleaners
through it and see what happens. The clatter you hear might
be only a few lifters, and not all of them, so this stuff could
indeed clear them up......

If the oil pressure builds immediately upon startup, then there's
no worry about the oil pump screen being clogged. Those are
good pressures.

lifter noise problem

i just want you to know that i solved my problem. i finely got the drive to tear off the valve covers, what an insane job just for takeing them off. any way the problem was the rocker arm assys. every thing is nice and quiet. thanks for the info yarktown7

Possible Valve noise on 5.0 Explorer??
After going up hill, long hill home from a night out...my pinging noise started to become a steady tap, now it seems to ease up once warmed up, changed oil as told by ford service manager..pulleys seem ok, but using a stethoscope on each valve cover..no tapping noise but its heard pretty goo don the intake manifold,im almost ready to give up and sell it but like this truck too much...
