two choices... either Skyjacker stage II 6" lift or Superlift 5.5" lift with superrunner steering. Best choices and not that expensive. Cheap stuff - Tuff Country, Rough Country not really worth your while.

True, true... expensive though but well worth it.

Superlift has also been know to have some problems while Skyjacker and James Duff are pretty sturdy. Yes they cost a lot but the complaints about them have been few and far between.

Yep, only two choices in this thread that have little chance of "going to ****": Skyjacker and James Duff.

Tuff Country does stand out for value (doesn't have the diff-popper drop-plate bracket), though it won't hold up to the same amount of abuse as the SJ or JD kits.

Something to note, if you get a lift that's more than 4", you should also get the Skyjacker pt# FA600 drop pitman arm to go with it, as anything else will be too short to correct the steering acceptably (even at 4" lift, the FA600 arm will still be an improvement over any arm provided with the kit). If you buy a Skyjacker kit, you may be able to have the arm substituted for the one it comes with (don't ask me why they don't automatically provide the arm, I wish I knew  ).

well but to trully correct the steering issues with any lift above 4" you should go with the Superlift's superrunner steering. I just put 10k miles on the odo with superruner sterring - works like a charm.

wow guys, thanks alot, got wat i was looking for, i think ill go with the skyjacker, i just wanted an idea of lifts to steer away from :]

You sure about that? This is a Superrunner kit at just 4" lift... Seems a little off if you ask me. :wtf:

Did you modify yours by dropping the centerlink down?

i was wondering if there was a way to lift my 94 4x4 xlt for little money as i am on a tight budget..i think i remember reading something about using f150 parts.i have never drove or even owned a lifted explorer so i wanna go with the min lift to get 2 inches PLEASE HELP

2" can be achieved by adding spacers under the front springs (2WD F-150 coil seats) and installing Add-A-Leaf in the back... simple, cheap.

Way better than with stock set-up... did you ever drive an "X" with 6" lift, stock steering and no anti-roll bar? Scary... and with superruner I was able to cruze at highway speeds no problem... I mean European highway speeds - talking about 90-100 m per h.

Here's mine... 6" Skyjacker with Superrunner steering... just dropped pitman arm, that's all.

the supperunner itself minimizes bumpsteer, but it is not the perfect solution, really to get it perfect u need a custom steering setup. Supperunners a step in the right direction, dropin the centerlink of it is a step further.

true... custom set-uo would be best but just look at the difference between those two... here's my former truck, also a 94 with 6" Skyjacker... and stock steering (including dropped pitman arm)...

anyone know a good site so i can buy the F150 coil seats and the add-a-leaf for the back??Also is there a thread on here that gives me a clue on how to install it??OR maybe someone lives in the Baltimore area or close to it?? I have no problem paying someone to install them for me

there is actually a write-up on installing the seats in the Explorer... those are regular factory -150 coil seats for a 2WD model... also the write-up includes Warrior shackles in the back which instead of add-a-leaf will give you also about 2" of lift. Shackles you can find at most 4x4 accesories stores - IE Summit Racing, Rocky Mountain Suspension to name a couple.

Here's the link to the write-up: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=187201

This is about what you want it to look like when you use stock suspension and a drop pitman arm

BUT, even with ours that flat when really twisted up the steering just doesn't work. I ran into that a few times this last weekend at truckhaven when I was at max droop/stuff (crossed up). I just couldn't steer.. Of course, it was on a night run which just made it more interesting. :)

Aparently Bkennedy also has that issue on his suspension and he is actually running the superrunner steering so I think it is more of a TTB issue than steering "type" issue.

thanks i have been looking for days on end for a write up to help me throw all of this as i try to do my own work it cant be that hard i built a 96 dodge neon that ran 11 in a 1/4 mile but now i am switching over to 4x4 as i moved to the mountains and need somemore balls

ok i am heading out tomorrow to fill my list for close to 2 inch lifts using the cheap route heres a list:

I need to get F150 coil spring seats
extended shackles
anything else i will need??

What should i go with shackles or add-a leafs??

I infact have, and I can fully 100% agree with you it was the e-ticket ride to F-ing hell and back lol (even scarier when it's not my own truck that I still had to be responsible for  Almost wrapped it around a tree on a left-hand curve it was screeching and acting up so bad).

No argument from me... The Superrunner kit is still better than stock w/ a typical drop arm, but the longer Skyjacker #FA600 arm puts the steering at an even better angle yet (dead-perfect for 4" lifts). You would have to drop the Superlift centerlink down a couple inches to get the geometry to be correct on it (if a person is open to performing such a mod, then I normally recommend going that route, as it doesn't put as much leverage on the steering box as the long SJ pitman arm would, however with Stonecrusher's new TTB linkage having hit the market recently, I'd be very tempted to go that route instead.

4" lift w/ SJ #FA600 (extreme) drop arm:

A corrected Superlift Superrunner steering kit:

By the looks of yours, you could move your axle to the upper hole and improve things a slight bit (combine that with a 2" drop on your centerlink and you'd be perfect) ;)

Maniak, have you checked that something wasn't binding? (that steering stabilizer maybe?) I can't say I've ever run into a situation that I couldn't steer well on the various setups I've had...
