I got in my 98 explorer tonight and noticed my light knob was laying in the floorboard. I tried for at least 30 minutes to get the knob back on and had to resort to using needle nose pliers to turn the lights on and off. The plastic knob itself isn't broken but the metal pole it resides on in the dash is loose. Any tips on putting it back on?

can you push the whole switch in when you use needlenose pliers to turn the metal switch stalk? if yes, then the screws holding the switch to the dash is either loose or the tab inside is broken..

read this write-up on how to open up the dash..

the 10th picture shows the plug/harness that goes into the headlight switch.. look right there and see if the whole switch assembly is loose.. screw it back if it is or JB weld it if the tab is broken.. put back the knob that fell off and maybe put a little bit of adhesive on the cavity if it is a bit wobbly while the dash is apart..

hope this helps and welcome to the forum!
