am looking at a 2000 explorer 70,000 mi. hood latch to cable latch broke ,rear hatch doesn't open can hear lock unlock but push button just springs , has the 4.0 6 cylinder. right now we are driving a 97 mountaineer with365,000 miles on it, don't burn oil ,had to disconnect front drive shaft [transfer case chain slapping] what a truly great investment . don't know much about explorers our mountaineer has the 5.0 8cyl. just wondering how hard to fix rear latch might be , anyway hello my name is dave guess i'm dyslexic [ intro and name last]

As for the differences between the Mountaineer and Explorer, there isn't much, other than in the way of perhaps a softer suspension in the Mountaineer, and more bells and whistles.
