We are currently looking for an automatic transmission for our tractor that has a 3:1> low gear and about 2.5:1 in 2nd. This will let us shift. We are now running a C6 as a single speed (using 1st only) @ about 2.5:1
We are restricted as to power, so we make about 475 hp and 500 lbs torque at a max rpm of 6000. We have been using our stock C6 with absolutly no durability problems.
#1. Can a 5R55W be sensibly built to handle that power range at a maximum 6k rpm?
#2. Can these be modified to allow full manual control of gear selection?
#3. May be some trans I'm unaware of that would work better.
All help will be appreciated!;)

My opinion, a 5R55W is no way stronger than a C6. There are no heavy duty parts for this trans.
It is a computer controlled trans. Solenoids control all shifts.

AOD's can be built to handle 600 HP. Do an internet search.

Does it have to be Ford? you could go with a wide ratio 904/998 Chrysler which has a 2.84 1st gear, and somewhere around a 1.5 2nd gear. or a TH-350 which has a 2.52 1st, and 1.52 2nd. Which would be nearly the same as a 4r/5r55e but all hydraulic

Otherwise stick with the C6. Unless you are wanting the overdrive? But if you leave it one gear, I guess OD doesn't matter.

Re: input on...

I don't need a stroger transmission. I need specific gear ratios. You cannot get a 2.5 as your second gear in anything you have mentioned. If a 5R55W is about as strong as a STOCK C6 it will be fine. Does anyone have a suggestion where to find Ford's tech specs forthis trans?
Thanks again for helping

I recommend that you seach this site for threads that have "valve body" in the title.
.
You will discover that this tranny does have problems. Some say it is a poor design.
.
Both my 1998 Mountaineer and my son's 1997 Explorer have developed shifting problems recently. Apparently, this is a common problem, and the valve bodies need to be rebuilt or upgraded.
.
I am not sure if the valve body rebuilds, or replacements improve the transmisison significantly.
.
Just curious, what do you use the tractor for ?

I am glad to see that there are heavy duty parts available, usually if you say something can't be done someone will prove you wrong. Thanks Wills05xlt4x4 for your input.

Re: Would like some..

We run a tractor in an economy or retro class with small tires and limited hp. You can see us at ABBMR.com. Single carb 650 cfm, 6000 rpm, automotive automatic trans. Low horsepower makes parts last, keeps costs down, makes gear ratio & tire combo all important. If tranny can be made to handle 450 hp we're good to go.
Thanks.
