Small Things

Bought 11/07 @ 128k for $3000, now 3/2010 @ 146k and I put at LEAST $4000 into it.

What I have repaired since I've owned the truck:

1. Tune up: Plugs, Wires, PCV, Air Filter, Fuel Filter, Wiper Blades, Seafoam, Serp Belt, Gas Cap
2. All Fluids Flushed
3. Coolant Flush, Tstat, Heater Control Valve, Radiator Cap
4. EVAP Control Solenoid, Pressure Sensor & Hoses
5. 4 Tires
6. 5 Shocks (yup even the dampner)
7. Complete Front End Rebuild (Moog)
8. Aftermarket CD player, Alarm, and Keyless Entry
9. Center Console Armrest, OEM Floor Mats
10. Driver's Side Front Door Lock (spring)
11. Battery & Alternator
12. Headlights (bulbs only)
13. Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF)
14. Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
15. Tensioner & Idler Pulley (replaced as a precautionary measure)
16. Radio Antenna (snapped off in car wash)
17. Upper Intake Gaskets & Cleaned Injectors (new O-rings)
18. Rebuilt Transmission (ouch $1900)
19. Idle Air Controller (IAC)
20. Front Auto Hubs
21. Rear Tow Hooks
22. Rear Brake Pads
23. Multifunction Switch
24. Brakelight (stoplight) Switch

To be fixed List:
1. Rear Window Wiper Motor (I will never fix this!)
2. Drivers Front Door Weather Stripping (wind noise)
3. Slightly weak idle (thinking coil since the original is still in there)
4. Rear End Whine (either pinion or rear wheel bearings)
5. Daytime Running Light Module (it's unplugged, no plan on replacing it)

Almost there... always something to fix

1998 xlt, 150k, one door doesn't open from the inside, not sure which as I never have passengers in the rear. need to fix the door lock spring on the drivers door. the light is out that shines onto the passenger seat. when it's cold it idles poorly until it warms up. paid a **** ton of money to fix this last year to no avail. I've had a blinker out since it got cold, I don't wanna change it. beyond that I haven't rolled it yet so I can't make it a full trail rig and that's a problem.

97 Eddie 4x4 SOHC

- Fix rocker panels
- Recharge A/C
- Sell it and get something with better mileage

Sweet, I can update this. All of the above that are labeled are done. Along with other things since then. Gas leak, new rear brakes. Now I need to add new front brakes to the list. Dang, it's actually kinda cool to see all the progress I've made on this thing in the past few months.

I have a 1997 Explorer Eddie Bauer 5.0L V8 215,000 miles.

Replaced U-joints and forgot to mark how it goes back together so I have a vibration, but its not a really bad vibration so I need to get around to fixing that.

Half of dash lights dont work, but still can see how fast I'm going at night.

Drivers outside door handle has spring missing so I have to manually push the handle closed.

Overdrive switch doesnt work

One Headlight is is hazed over

The lock button doesnt work, but unlock does, but who needs that darn lock button anyways???

Exhaust Leak

Needs front rotors, vibrates slightly when stopping.

Speedo is 5 MPH under what I'm really going

Rear drivers side door wont open from inside due to a broken handle.

Rear "hatch" opens, but the window wont cause its rusted shut.

passenger side back-up light had water in it at one time and its dark and filled with grime.

A/C works, but has a big leak somewhere.

Blend door is broke, heat is all I have!

Need new speakers.

But besides just a couple minor issue's I love her!! Runs great and have no complaints about it. Its mechanically sound!

-passenger side front wheel bearing assembly DONE
-passenger side stabilizer end link REPLACED BOTH

1998 XLT V6 about 140,000 miles
-Driver side lock button.(Cant lock but can unlock. go figure)
-Many rust spots and dents.
-front bumper. either pulled out or replaced.
-exhaust
-Shackles and TT
-get all four wheels to match.
-front passenger speaker
-center console lid.(common wear and tear)
-add tow hooks.

Many items on this list will be done over the summer.

This is odd because out of the three Explorers I've had over the last few years, my current one has the least miles by far, but seems to need the most trivial fixes.

1998 XLT 5.0 AWD - 88,700 miles

Power Steering Pump (Whines like crazy... louder than my exhaust)
Driver's Door Lock Actuator (Gets stuck sometimes when it's cold)
Battery Saver Relay Module/Gem (Intermittent power windows, dome light, wipers, etc.)
Torsion Bar Pads (Thump clang over bumps)
Blend Door (Have to adjust the knob several times before it moves)

Overall, I still think I have it pretty lucky, so I won't complain too much.

PrivateRyan,

I am 100% positive that your driver's door unlock will not work due to a single wire that is broken in the little black "barrel" in between your door hinges. My last Explorer suffered this and many others on the board have as well. It's an easy fix and definitely worth it to regain the functionality of the unlock button. Slike the rubber sleeve off of the barrel to expose the wires and it'll be buried in there somewhere. There are quite a few, but something tells me mine was pink or maybe green... it's been a while, so I can't remember exactly which color. It could have been something totally different, lol.

Ok My turn

-Replace rack and pinion.
-replace all shocks.
-needs new handles in the rear doors.
-replace idler pulley and belt
-rear rotors and pads
-replace lift arms for hood.
-install grill Guard (already have it just need to fab up some brackets)

-Driver side window sticks on the way down.

and Im sure the list will go on :) slowly but surely.
I still have to recover from replacing both the CV's upper and lower ball joints, upper control arms, lower control arm bushings and sway bar end links. Oh and the body lift and AAL

At 46,000 miles my explorer although not the highest mileage vehicle here, it's not a low mileage one either.

Exhaust is bent *get that fixed*
A/C randomly switches between center fan and defroster (some how this one is connected to my throttle go figure)
Passenger side b pillar rattles
Rear differential leaks on driver side
and of course my biggest problem it's not paid off yet still owe a bit of money

Want list:
front/rear tow hooks
roof rack cross bars
class III hitch
additional lighting up front and aux back up lights
better stereo/ speakers or just figure out how to hook Ipod to factory radio
intake/ exhaust
soon I will need new tires, possibly by December

'95 XLT
needs:
1. rust
2. rust
3. figure whats going out so I don't have to keep bleeding clutch 2x week.
4. light in headlamp switch.
5. probably a fuel filter, looks original with 184k
6. change that black burned up power steering fluid. if it wasnt for that whining pump I'd hardly hear anything from under the hood...

wants:
1. build a hidden sub box for in the back
2. find the trim piece for the cargo area floor at the door seal (salvage yard trip)
3. speakers, have 5x7s and 6x9s if I can get em in somehow...
4. fog lights.
5. overhead console (another salvage yard trip. I found one in great shape, right color last time I went but didnt have time to tear it out :( )
6. synethic fluids all around.

I guess overall I'm pretty happy with it though.
