Lock not locking

On my '99 Explorer I've got two problems with my drivers door lock.

  1. When using the remote key fob, sometimes the door will lock, sometimes it won't
  2. I can't use the key itself - the mechanism won't move
The lock actuator itself seems to work - I can happily lock and unlock the door from inside (both by the switch and the button near the window), and the automatic locking/unlocking when moving/stopped works. It's purely when I use the remote fob, and then it's only occasionally, but often enough to be annoying.

Any suggestions?

I don't mean to sound sarcastic, but have you checked the battery in the remote?

I would say that is an excellent suggestion and the first place to start. Try a new battery first

Thanks for the responses.

Both remotes work fine, and lock/unlock the car on demand. It's just the drivers door which occasionally will not lock. Unlocking/locking a few times will normally get it locked though.

Check to see if the key works when the door is open. If it does then the problem is prob the latch.

No, the key will not turn at all when the door is open or closed. I wonder it the lock/ignition has been changed at some point.

Try some WD-40 in the cylinder. These locks will seize up from not being used.
