Okay.. I'm only posting this to get my dad off my butt

He thinks I can buy locking hubs for my 2000 mounty AWD that will switch it from AWD to 2wd and vise versa (without changing anything else)

if someone can please explain why this wont work I would appreciate it, I'm having a hard time explaining it and I would rather have someone who knows these vehicles tell me so I can contribue the word

thanks

If you want to "shut off" your AWD, you have 2 choices. Remove your front driveshaft (and run around with chock blocks to block your wheels every time you get out) or change your transfercase. Your choice of transfercase will determine what wiring (if any) you will have to add to your truck.

EDIT

The hub/bearing assemblies can not be retrofitted with manually locking hubs.

The transfer case swap was my plan, but he's convinced there is an easier way  I don't want to remove the front driveshaft because ultimately I still want 4x4 but I don't want it all the time

your truck has cv axles that go into a wheel bearing in the knuckle. There is no disconnect for AWD trucks and the disconnect for 4x4 is at the transfercase.

Have to change to a part-time transfercase, swap to '98-'00 Ranger PVH front spindles & shafts, then install AVM manual locking hubs in place of the PVH crap.

Might I suggest the "easiest" transfercase swap for what you want to end up with would be the manual shift BW4406. No added wiring needed, mechanical connections only. You can add wiring easily if you want to have the lights on your dash indicate if you are in 4hi or 4 lo. There are plenty of writeups here that detail where to make the "modifications" to your floorboards, all parts needed, etc etc etc. I actually have six threads saved to my hard-drive...someday when I have the cash...

I have two threads, v8boatbuilder's swap for the electric shift and then of course mountaineergreen's transfer swap. I'd much rather do the electric 4x4 swap but I read on his thread where theres extra wiring you'll probably have to do if you own a 98+ as opposed to the plug and play option of the earlier year swaps.

I just don't want to get in over my head with electrical stuff but at the same time... I would really love to do it turn knob style

If you don't mind me asking..why do you want the "turn-the-knob" style?
As far as "getting over your head" the BW4406 manual looks pretty darn easy, actually.

I mean over my head by doing the turn knob (electric) style

I just like the idea of a knob better than cutting into my floor to put a shifter in

From what I have read, its rather easy to "eyeball" where you need to cut the hole. Just start small and increase the size of the hole while fitting the shifter. Give enough to engage all settings, and your good to go. Same goes for cutting the carpet, start with a small hole, move the shifter around and trim a little at a time.

yeah I mean I know it's do'able and wouldn't be that bad but honestly.. I think it would be awesome to just have a knob ya know?
