Is this typical of the Explorer. It's like 5 miles before I get any heat.

Suspect that the thermostat might be stuck open. But from my experience when T-stats fail they get stuck closed.

Morning are now in the 20s for me. Need some heat NOW.

T stats are designed to stick open so you don't ruin the motor.

For my 2003 XLT with V6, it doesn't seem to take much time for that to get up to temp. I'll start the car up in the morning and immediately go...when I'm only about 2 miles down the road, the temp gauge shows at the "normal" point, and warm air is just starting to blow from the vents. It takes a little longer for the warm air to circulate throughout the large cabin, but at least it's a fairly quick warm-up for a vehicle of that size.

My 2003 Mustang GT, on the other had, seems like it takes forever to get up to temp. It's the V8 of course, and I've got to drive it at least twice as far as the Explorer before the temp needle even moves! And that's about when the warm air is coming out too, but it doesn't take as long to get the cabin warm since it's a much smaller vehicle.

One ruined engine. Several overheated vehicles. And many bulging radiator hoses tells me that t stats do failed close.

Do the v6 and 8 have similar blocks. I don't even know the material.

I never said they didn't fail closed, it's just more typical that they fail open by design.
