Well, unfortunately my Hifonics Taurus is slowly dying on me (it's apparently been operative since about 1993 according to my uncle who gave it to me). Before I get it replaced, I'm going to have it all checked out to be sure there's nothing I can do to get it fixed...
Regardless, though, I'm getting in the market for a new amp sometime soon. So, with you guys as my info source for stuff like this, I bring you these questions
Should I go mono or 2-channel?
My sub's around 600W RMS I believe, so what would a good RMS and peak wattage be? As well, what are some good brands? I'm looking at onlinecarstereo.com, and they have an Audiobahn 800W mono amp for $75. I don't want to spend too much cash, so that's right up my alley. How is Audiobahn as a brand?

Haha, I just looked it up on OCS. Here is the link. I love one guys comment.

"This Amp hits soo hard i cant be in my integra for more than 2 minutes with it all the way up.i have this pushing 2 kicker compvrs and it is the sweetest set up you can buy for under 500"

Go for a bigger name. It looks like junk to me.

You get what you pay for...Audiobahn is flea market crap and is overrated.

I'd rather have a real 100 watt amp than that "800 watt" Audiobomb junk.

Whatever amp you get depends on the final load you have after wiring the sub(s).

Also you can look into replacing some of the internal parts of that Hifonics amp. Old amps like that go for a lot of money. If you want I can find a site that repairs amplifiers and restores them. Amps today aren't made like back in the day. I wish though.

aznboi, I'd really appreciate it if you could check into that for me. Drop it to me in an e-mail if you could - trev913@gmail.com.
The others, thanks for your honest opinions. OCS is kind of confusing to me - I'm about to buy a set of Infinity Kappas from there for $80 (good deal, at least from what I know) - but intermingled with that is this sort of cheap stuff.

Could I have some ideas for amps to power a 600W RMS sub?

I think that amp was built by Steven Mantz, a god among men in the amplifier world. You can have it repaired by the man himself if you contact him at www.zedaudiocorp.com

He's reasonable, and he's a blast to talk to- it'll be educational.

alpine mrp-m650. 600w rms at 2 ohms. or 400w at 4 ohms. what sub do you have exactly? how many voice coils and what ohm load is it/are they?

Typical rule of thumb for amplifiers when looking for "real" wattage, is 10 amps of fusing per 100 watts of amp rms output. If it is supposed to be 800 watts rms, look for 80 amps of fusing on the amplifier.

More or less, I agree with this.

Im buyin all my stuff from www.sonicelectronix.com

heres a nice rca amp that should meet your needs

See above: I'm not keen on that RCA, but it COULD technically make that power if it is rated at 14.4 volts- otherwise it would have to be perfectly efficient. It still is a good price for that amount of power, IF the ratings are accurate.

Infinity,
I did not see the Taurus X on the Zed Audio site, but I think I may drop them an e-mail regardless.

DMacLennen,
I know it's only a single voice coil, and am fairly sure it's at 2 ohms.
I'm not sure on the other specs, but know that the aforementioned Taurus X amp that I'm running to it is doing a nice job pounding it. :-)

Zed made those amps for HiFonics MANY years before he started selling his own. I know he did amps for Hi fonics, USAcoustics, ESX, and many others. He can repair ANY amp, but if it's one he designed and built, you may as well have it done by the master. If it turns out he cant do it, I had a couple amps fixed by www.audiotekx.com . They were quite reasonable, and upfront with me.

i used to run 2 sony 10inch subs with sony 2 chan amp ( 1000) watt.... sounded real good let me kno if you want more of my specs ill help u set it up over sum messages

They have some hidden gems recently, but only sold in the Japanese market. VERY nice ES line stuff. The Japanese laugh at the quality of the audio equipment available over here. We are a "bling" society and to hell with sound quality- at least on the mass market. :(:thumbdwn:
