I have a 03 awd mountaineer and i am having some noise issues at low speed i was told by a retired mechanic that there is a procedure for adjusting the chain in the transfer case and he thinks that is the problem but he does not have the info.I am looking for and info on this adjustment or on rebuilding the transfer case which i think will need to be done.we had it on the lift and found the slop coming from the front driveshaft if you turn it there are tight spots and loose spots so i think the chain may be streched out.if anyone has any usefull info or links please post them, thank you.

I'm not getting this one, but at least I'll give you a bump.

If the chain is stretched, why would the front drive shaft vary in resistance?

I'm curious on the same info. My 02 has an audible "growl" from the t-case area when in gear or reverse, at a stop. Goes away in park or at higher RPM. I was also thinking worn drive chain... Had the t-case drained and filled a while back and the noise hasn't changed after another 3k miles.

chain

I think the chain is streched in one spot because as you turn the shaft it will get tight (normal) at one spot in the rotation but get slopy at other spots, there my be other damage possibly to the shaft bearings but the tight spot stays in the same place i think a bad bearing would be random.i have seen chains strech in one or two spots but the rest is normal on the machines that i repair in the past and they act like this, but i have not had a t-case apart before so i am not sure.
