guys,
got another hard luck project on my hands and need some info.
just picked up another 03xlt 4x4 the other day with a bad 4.0 (anybody wanna guess what happened to it?) with 131000 on it. anyways it's a flex fuel engine. found a good engine from an 05 with better miles though i am not sure if it is a flex fuel motor at the moment. i know hollander says that only 02-03 will work for this year but i have proved them wrong before. they are looking at an exact interchange. i am pretty sure the core engine remains the same meaning just little crap like the injector rail and maybe a sensor or two has to change out. i shouldn't have to dig deep in the motor, change cams or anything like that should i? anyways any info is greatly appreciated.

Swap it for the other motor...imo

That's what i figured too. i am wondering what the difference is between the 03 and 05 engines. i have heard that the 05's benefit from timing gear revisions that are more reliable than the older version and i have heard that the injection rail is different on the newer one. i just want to make sure that it will work with a minimum of changeover from the old engine. more info would be great if anybody has done this or something like this.

i have an 03 explorer vin code k flex fuel, and I replaced with a 2010 ranger e vin code and no problems, I just replace fuel rail, intake, exhust manifolds, make sure you get the right spark plugs for your year motor. there is a differance in some years.

very good. good info. i did a swap on a 02 awhile back but they were the same year. i will get some good pics of the swap this time around for the guys who may be a little scared to go digging around under the hood. keep y'all posted and thanks for the info.

hey guys, quick question for ya, i got the 2003 4.0 xlt with the 5r55s tanny, and all of a sudden the O/D light started flashing and it started shifting really hard. well to make a long story short, the junk yard round here has half price on all parts, so if i can find a transmisson, it will only cost me $50!!! so is there any other transmission model that can be a direct swap out???

Sounds like the soleniod block. They can be found for about $260 on ebay.

Is there any way to pin point if this is the issue? I disconected the battery and now the o/d off light is not flashing any more, but my truck is still struggling when its time to shift

dkindle613, did you check the o/d servo? my o/d light started flashing and after some research I decided to replace just the o/d servo. total cost = $150 labor plus parts. It fixed the problem!!
