Good day all, I am looking for the original style JBL amp that came with my 97 Limited edition Explorer. I am trying to piece the sound system back together after a total system meltdown. The FORD part number is: F67F-18C851-AA . I have being reading how a lot of you are replacing your original sound system for something stronger and louder. I do not need it any louder then what it was and I always thought that it sounded pretty good, for a factory system. Anyway I was hoping that there was someone out there that didn’t need their old amp and would be willing to sell it. If you have one and want to get rid of it, ether respond to this Thread or e-mail me at
tflatt@mnsi.net and we can work out the details. Thanks

I really think it would be a boat load cheaper (and easier) to go after market- unless you're the type of guy who likes vinyl records for their distinct sound (If you're looking for this type of sound; a factory stereo won't provide it for you. It's just going to be inferior sound in contrast to aftermarket- go aftermarket!). Even upgrading your stereo with something from Walmart- you'll be better off (please note I'm not an advocate of, nor do I promote the installation of Walmart bought car stereos).

OR: Depending on the severity of your "total system meltdown;" and what exactly that means needs to be replaced- the best option is buying only a new deck and running your factory speakers, assuming they weren't affected in your "total system meltdown." The out put and sound quality of an aftermarket deck exceed that of a factory '97 Ford Explorer...

Original stereo Components

Actually, I liked the sound of the factory system. It is the best that they had in audio sound for that year, the speakers and the amp/sub amp combination gives you very nice sound without making your ears bleed. Even my son liked the sound until he blew the sub woofer and then fried the sub amp. Anyway, I thought that replacing it with original equipment would be cheaper and easier in the long run considering that it would all be used parts. You are right though; I have heard some after market systems that make this one sound like a transistor radio, but that type of high fidelity sound comes a high price tag.

what I would do is Buy a new sub, amp, and head unit. To tell you the truth, It will probbly be cheaper, and will sound alot better. I redid my friends in his 99 expidition with a kicker CVR 8 in sub with a Kicker ZX 400w amp. as for the head unit, we replaced it with a pioneer for about $150. the good thing about the amp is that it comes with a remote, and can be turned up and down on demand.

I may beabale to help you out. Do you need both or just one amp?

Main amp

I think I only need the main amp, I got another sub amp and installed it, still no sound fromthe speaker.

The 95 and 96 JBL systems do NOT have an additional amp other than the subwoofer. I suspect the 97 is the same. However, they do have a "remote chassis unit" that is located next to the subwoofer that could be confused as an amp. It in actuality is the radio. Well, since the head unit and CD player send signals to it to be amplified, you could technically call it an amp I guess. But it is the radio receiver.

Dumb question maybe, but have you checked EVERY fuse?

Yes I checked all three fuses

Well that would explain why the Antenna goes to, what I thought was an amp, instead of the radio! The radio still works but it dose not go very loud and there is no Bass tones. OK full version, the rear sub was blown by my son, Dam RAP, so I ran the speaker wires out to a 12” sub box. It worked fine for about an hour, then the sound started to fade and there was a strong electrical burning smell and the sub stooped working. I assumed that I had fried the sub amp so I replaced it with one I got from a scrap yard. They told me that the amp did work but I still do not have any sound coming from the Sub speaker, the radio is still not very load and still no bass tones.
