Besides the basics ( motor/trans )

Look at -

1 - Underbody ... Look to see if the truck was decently maintained during those harsh winter months when the truck was out. Look for lots of rust. While rust is always a given, you'll know what I mean when you look. Also check the spare tire cable, if it's frayed or not there, you're in for $70 from ford .. ( people on here sell them for ALOT cheaper )

2 - Brake systems ... Check the caliper bleeder screws ( mine were so rusted, I could not bleed the brakes; so no brake job for me ) That means new calipers. Check the rear wheel cylinders for leaks and check for cracked drums ... Also look at the brake lines... Lots of rust ? Check the lugs for rounded or cracked heads

3 - Suspension ... Check the leaf springs for broken leafs that slide out when the rear is jacked up ... Original shocks ?? I'm not a suspension guy, so people on here will know what to tell you. Any missing bushings ?

4 - Motor ... Pull the dipstick and check for " milk " ( anti-freeze in the motor ) .. Pull the rad cap and check the color. Is it a nasty, dirty brown color ?

Take it for a ride. Does the 4x4 work ? Does it pull to the left or right while driving? An alignment can run from $65 to $150 on X's. Any high rpm vibrations ? ( is sign of u-joints on their way out ) Check on how it idle's and the temp gauge ( for a thermostat that's stuck )

thanks nserafini!

I did take it for test drive and the motor ran smooth and it shifted well. When I put it in 4 Wheel Drive and made a sharp hairpin turn, it pulled in every direction, which the sales guy said was normal. When we did it in Rear Wheel Drive- it was just fine..

thanks again!

What are they asking for it?

around 5000 too much?

You must be in love.

I bought a 97 xlt 4WD W/107K almost two years ago for $5200.

Wayyyyyyy tooooooo much .....

5K is alot for a '93 with 177k on it. While X's will run well beyond the 200K mark, that's still alot ...

For a spotless, well groomed and perfectly maintained truck w/ 177K, I'd say that $3K is the high end of price ...

Too much

I had a '93 before my "new" '98. I loved it and it's still being driven as an around-town baby-buggy by a good friend (I sold it for $1). $5k is more than twice what it's worth at that mileage. Find out what's been done to it (is it still on it's original clutch?!?). If you have a good mechanic, take it to them and ask them to inspect it from elbow to ear - if you know what I mean. My '93 had the heads done at 110k and the tranny (mine was an automatic that did a lot of towing) done at 135k. The steering box whined at times but I topped off on fluid a couple / few times per year and it was no big deal. One major flaw - the ABS in that vehicle is nearly dangerous. Put one wheel on sand and the other three on dry pavement, mash down on the brake and you get nothing. The first time it happened to me I about had to change my underwear.

Way too much!!!! 2500.00

Wow that is alot.i just sold my 92 sport that was in excellent condition with 115000 miles loaded with mods for 3500.

Don't forget about the transmission. I've got a 93 XLT and mine had to be rebuilt after only 52K miles. Seems like the trannies in these things are really weak. But I've got 80K on my X now, and luckily, no problems with the transmission.
