I am pretty mechanically inclined but I have heard all kinds of reasons for why I have oil coming out my exhaust. But I would like to try to narrow it down so not to have to tear everything apart for no reason if at all possible. It has the occasional lifter tap and runs pretty good but there is oil all over rear hatch of explorer. Doesnt burn it just spits it out so to speak. It is lifted with 35's so it works hard going down the road so I would like to fix this cause it uses about three quarts or so each oil change. I do have small leak but not anything that severe. Any input would be great thanks

Are you sure its coming out the exhaust, not leaking from the rear main? Usually when its leaking there it only does so when the truck is running, so looking at the driveway/parking lot in the morning it would just appear to be a small leak, if any at all.

welcome

I am positive it is in the exhaust. And i know it is oil cause i havent lost any tranny fluid at all. And about every 3 weeks i use 2 quarts oil. And yes i do have a small rear main leak but it is minimal. If you stand behind explorer and put your hand on the exhaust there is raw oil blown on you. And the back hatch is covered in oil. So I am very positive it is at least the majority is coming from the exhaust. I was told the intake bolts if loose will cause you to lose oil but I dont think I would see that thru my exhaust. So I am not sure whether its thru my valve seats or something like that?

You could be getting a lot of blow-by through your rings, but I would think that it would be burning the oil, not just blowing it out the exhaust, if that was the case. Hopefully you get this figured out, it doesn't seem healthy at all for your motor.

yeah I know thats why I need to fix it although I normally do all my own work including major motor work but never had a situation like this. It still runs good just the oil problem although today it wouldnt go into overdrive so i am gonna have that to fix to haha

Do you have the stock exhaust on still? The cats should burn that oil up before it ever gets to the tailpipe. Does it drip out of the tailpipe? I would think the pipe would be soaked in oil on the inside.

The only thing I can think is the exhaust valve seals are bad and oil that gets through the seals is being pushed out on the extake stroke.

I would pull the ex manifolds and see which runners are oil soaked. You may be able to get away with new seals but it sounds to me like your motor may be in need of some refurbishment.

Yeah I just talked to a buddy that rebuilds motors at a local machine shop he said the same. he said that the 2.8 and 2.9 were bad for valve seals going bad. And according to him the 4.0 is just a stroked model of the older two motors. He told me to check compression but he thinks I can get away with rebuilding heads. I dont want to rebuild the motor right now cause I have plans for a 302 this spring. I may try to get away with it till then but I dont think I can. I dont drive it far I work close by but it is my off road toy. So it needs to run good

Thanks for everyones help this site seems to be very informative and helpful

You could just put valve seals in it for now. Its not hard to do, but if you gonna put the 5.0 in it I would just baby it for now.

I got an extra 5.8 laying around....

Oh yeah fuel injection or carb? How much I have a 5.8 but it is old wanting to do fuel injection but havent looked into it enough to see what would all have to be changed. Yeah I think I am gonna do something because I am spending a small fortune in oil haha

I have a 72 bronco with a 351 windsor in it and I like it. It is just a toy for off road but a great old truck
