I have a '91 and just lost my 4th gear.
Has anyone had this problem?
I did a search and found mostly info on '94 and later models that do not have the vacuum modulator, like I do.

When my OD went out, it was a band issue and the whole thing needed to be rebuilt. I believe we have the same tranny, but I wasn't lucky enough to get a vaccuum problem...

I purchased the Explorer used and the first thing that needed to be replaced was the vacuum modulator. The seal in it ripped and caused the vacuum hose to slowly suck tranny fluid into the intake manifold. Besides seeing the tranny fluid drip out of the hose when I pulled it from the modulator, I noticed that all the shift points were extremely high.
The problem that I have now is that the tranny will shift normally in "normal drive = D" but will not shift into "overdrive = (D)". So I am cruising at 55 on the freeway at 3000 to 3100 rpm, instead of my normal 2100 to 2200 rpm.

4th Gear Works Now!

Took the Explorer into Pearl City Transmission.
It took them only a day to find a loose 4th gear solenoid wire in the Transmission and to repair it.
As a bonus, they adjusted the tranny's vacuum modulator to better match the larger MAF, a night and day difference.
