I have a 98' EB Explorer with the mach stereo system (factory) with cd changer and steering wheel controls. Yesterday as I was driving to work I looked down and noticed that there was no display on my stereo. The stereo works fine except for no display . When I left work yesterday it came back on but went back out about a mile down the road. Any suggestions on what this could be? Will I need to buy a new head unit? Can it be fixed?

Your best bet would be to find a stereo out of any '98 to '01 Explorer and replace it. Getting it repaired or buying a new one would cost hundreds of dollars. The cheapest way would be to buy an aftermarket one, but I assume you don't want to lose the changer and steering wheel controls. Find the same stereo from a '98 to '01 truck and you should be fine. Make sure its not a '97 or older though, the wiring harness was completely revamped for '98 so an older one won't work.

Do a search, there is TONS of info on this problem.

Your options are

Send the radio in for repair

Attempt the solder repair yourself (precision soldering involved and the repair doesn't always last.

Get the updated circuit boards and replace the boards that are causing this problem (this repair actually lasts)

Purchase an already updated radio off of ebay as there are 3-4+ people on there that sell them with a warranty and all for resonable prices

MAKE SURE you get the proper stereo, there are 2 types of the "dual media" stereos, one with a factory sub, one without. They look the same, but they are NOT interchangable, the one for the factory subwoofer system will not put any bass towards your door speakers as it has a built in, unadjustable crossover.

Common problem... there's a lot on the site about it. A search for 'radio display' will give you all the info you ever wanted. It can be fixed. Some have repaired it themselves and others have sent it out to be fixed. I sent mine out and it cost about $110. It has been working perfectly for some time now.

There is a guy on ebay who fixes them cheaper... there was a post about a month ago that listed the ebay link and I believe that one of the members was going to try him out. You may want to find that post and PM the member.

I had a '99 EB Expedition once upon a time and the same thing happend on it. I would say just replace it.

This is what I did about a year ago and it has worked fine ever since. I actually ordered two replacement boards from and fixed mine and a coworkers with the same problem. It was simple to do and much less expensive than buying a replacement head unit. I think I paid around $90 per board (only one board needed per vehicle). You just send your old board to him when you're done.

I have mine done at

Turnaround time was lest than a week. I'm in Southern NH so it might have been less for me but I'm very happy with the service. Total cost was $111.00 including return shipping. One year later and working just fine. :exp:

Same place I used. Same (or even better as I recall) turnaround and still going strong for 2 years.
