I have a 92 explorer that I loved but I think it's done. Still runs! Just that the rust has taken over and alot of tired parts. So i'm starting to look for another 4x4. I though maybe a Cherokee, then a Grand Cherokee but the unibodies kinda, well, I don't know. So now i'm thinking of a 2nd Gen explorer. Any advice what to look for? All I want to do is give it a small lift, some bigger tires and maybe some bad ass bumpers. (that would only be the beginning, don't tell my wife!)

Well, like i told someone else earlier, Buy a donor truck and swap drivetrains!

If you going for a lift fix the one you have now. I like 2nd gens but they are harder to lift.

im from north of winnipeg, if you are going to get a second gen. and dont want rust, avoid a sport, or any of the ones that have ground effects. i got the shocker of my life last week when the truck was at parkside for a claim. to look at the truck, it is in nice shape, with out the rocker ground effects on, rotten! i used to be a body man, and i didnt think they could get that bad!!!

Blend door is a problem on the 2nd gens, check for heat and a/c. Trannies are...well weak in alll explorers, stronger in the v8's though. SOHC have lower intake manifold gasket issues, can cause hard starts but not too hard to replace if they're like my OHV. Also the timing chain tensioner in the SOHC's tend to go bad.....Think that's all the common problems...Saggy rear ends....

small lift in a 2nd gen you can do torsion twist then shackles in the rear for about 2 inchs of lift. 3 inch body lift using a ranger body lift kit and custom bumper brackets.

I would love to fix it but the rust seems to be beyond repair.
