Lots of blue smoke

S

Good Day,

I have a wee problem, I could use advice on. I was on the highway yesterday, driving up a big long hill. Towards the top, I started to hear a sound kinda like a jar of marbles rattling. The X lost a bit of power and I noticed a lot of blue smoke comming out the the back.

I pulled over and upon inspection I found: a small puddle of oil (3 inch) under the engine, the downpipe was disconnected from the maniflod, a little oil sprayed inside the engine compartment (steering shaft/starter). When idling it runs rough, haven't driven it. After start, there doesn't seem to be as much smoke. But there is still some.

Any ideas? My thoughts are rings, but could oil leaking from somewhere have sprayed into the downpipe and started to burn?

Seems weird that either the rings and downpipe went at the same time or an oil leak started and the downpipe at the same time.

Thanks

sounds like a bad head gasket, but i could be wrong, my dad had the same thing happen to his old 88 s10 blazer

Don't know a whole lot about the explorer engine, but same thing happened to me in an 87 s-10 I had. Timing chain jumped, piston hit valve, chipped the piston, blew the head gasket, and yes, it blew the downspout and sprayed oil everywhere. I'm no expert but sounds like you have a similar problem. I found the extend of the damage when I pulled the head.
