1984 Bronco II
I have a 1984 Bronco II that I purchased as a project/ daily driver. It runs just fine right now, it only has 100,000 miles on the 2.8 carburated (sp?) v-6. I want to put a bigger 6-cylinder in it though, as well as a new transmission, transfer case, and possibly axles, if I need to. I was thinking about the 4.0 out of either a Ranger or the Explorer. Transmission and transfer case I know know jack about so any advice on that would be spectacular. The axles: I don't know if I even need to change them, this is going to be a hunting truck, and it is going to get beat up, but it is also going to be a daily driver. As far as the suspension is concerned, I just want to put 30's on it and have them clear with reasonable travel room. Any info on engine swaps or advice on what I should use for tranny, transfer case, or if I should change the axles would be great, you can respond here or send me an e-mail at morlhug@aol.com. Also lockers? Do I need them? Most of my off-roading will be in rocky terrain.

There is a ton of info on the mods you have planed in the search forum. With that said, I would go 4.0 or even 302 like I did on my B2. Then swap in a Dana 35 from a first gen X for the front and the rear 8.8 from the same X. Those 84 axels arn't much. I've had no problems with my D35s and 8.8 coupled with a high torque 302. Don't forget to chop the top so you will have plenty of field of view for those hunting trips, not counting a lower COG for traversing those hills. Then post some pics of those bucks.

Oh ya, welcome to the forum. May want to check out my build section on some of the mods I mentioned, plus a few more HA HA.

A 4.0 is a great swap along with an M5OD 5 speed, your current t-case is plenty strong and your axles should be fine with 30s. I beat on my D28 with 31s and never hurt it. I would throw a lock-right in the rear axle (7.5), this makes it stronger because you eliminate the weak spiders and waaay more off-road capable, I'll never own another 4x4 without at least 1 locker. The D35 is a much beefier axle but I think the D28 will hold up, if not, it's an easy swap.
