So my wife was driving to work, thankfully still on the dirt road. She reports a loud clunk and it would not move anywhere in any gear. I haven't had a chance to look at it, always dark when i get home from work. Anyways its a 96 4.0 4x4. I think its the a4ld but I can't remember. Will post more info when i get it. But is the trans dead? Im sure it is. What are options and general prices??

I think the 96 actually had the 4r55e not the a4ld. But has there been any signs of the trans going, ie slipping, clunking between gears, etc? Although i have seen a number transmissions die, they usually give some sort of warning signs. But it is entirely possible it just gave up like that.
Another thing to check since i know you havent gotten out there to take a look, but make sure the driveshaft didnt let go.
And one last thing, since its 4x4, it is also possible the issue lies in the t-case. Those i have seen let go without much warning, and if something internally broke thats important, it could prevent the truck from being driven.
Good luck with everthing, and hopefully its just some stupid simple fix

Yeah it slipped a few times and was clunky from time to time. Took it to a shop to get the O/D fixed but it didn't help. I'm hoping its not the T-case.

My father in law towed it to his place. He checked the fluid and said it was burnt. Now im trying to find the best approach cheapest route and get rid of the damn thing. I still need to double check what trans it has in it.

I have a 2000 xl but with a m5r1 manual. This loud clunk and no movement happened to me the other day. My t case had locked up which in turn caused the output shaft of the gearbox to shear off. So needed to replace both gearbox and t case.
