Hello everybody, First off I have been attempting to run a search for this kinda topic but I get nothing but blank pages so here it goes. I have a 98XLT with the Auto,4high,4low system or "truetrac" Is what I think it's called. I've had the truck for a few months now and we are finally starting to get some decent snow. I work out on oil rigs as a geo consultant. I havent driven my truck for a while so I decided to to a little exploring today. We only have 2-2 1/2 inches on the ground so I did not figure I would get into much trouble (if I did I was only a mile or two from the rig where I had plenty of big trucks and a front loader to pull me out if necassary) So I find this nice little hill I want to climb:

It does not have alot of snow but I still wanted to test out the 4low. So I stopped, put the tranny in N keeping my foot on the brake pedal and proceed to go into 4-low. I hear the small clunk that you hear when it engages the planetary gears. I then put it in drive let off the brake then gave it a little gas. I hear a large clunk (kinda like when you have an auto tranny and your rockin back and forth to get unstuck and you go into reverse or drive too fast and it scares the crap out of you) then the trucks bucks or lurches forward a bit. I give it just a little gas and it seems fine I can tell I'm in 4-low. So I went ahead and climbed the hill without any problems. As soon as I get to the top I stop put it in N and try to shift out of 4-low. I hear the shift motor clunk like it does when you engage or disengage 4-low except I hear it 4 times before the light on the cluster finally goes out. I was a little worried so I drove back to the rig. When I got there I decided to try to put it back in 4-low to see if the same thing would happen again but it operated just as it should. Has anybody had a similar experience with their 4-low? This was my first time having to use it in this truck. I think the previous owner was a female who had all the work done at the stealership (still got ford everything including the battery). So I have no idea how many or if the truck has ever even been put in 4-low. Sorry for the long post, I am at work and quite bored. Before anybody asks I was on level ground when I put it in 4-low so it did not roll either way before engaging.

It sounds like the gears in the case may not have been perfectly lined up when it was disengaging... there may have been a slight bind when it was shifting out of low range, and when the gears in the t-case slipped into neutral, the input gear ended up not being perfectly lined-up with the gear set, and the shift motor couldn't force it in. Lucky for you, it kept trying until it went in.

If it did that again, I would let the vehicle roll slightly (less than 3mph) to help let the gears mesh... there's nothing wrong with doing that.

If it only does it this one time and never does it again, I wouldn't worry about it. If it starts doing it every time, then I'd worry...

Thanks gijoecam,

I figured it was something like that kinda. I did engage it again when I got back to the rig site and I drove like 15 ft then disengaged it and it worked fine so hopefully it was a fluke!
