Hi all,
I've got a 95 Explorer Sport with the 4.0l v6 and 157000 mi on it. I hear a loud high pitched sqeal coming out of the front passenger side of the engine bay. I had a friend listen to it, and he said it could be the clutch mechanism of the mechanical fan. If anyone can help me, it would be much appreciated.

Check my post at the end of this thread :
Dead Link Removed

May be the problem , may not but always good to check :)

it may be a engine accessory binding (alternator, water pump) and making the belt squeal. (check your voltmeter on dash, is the temp gage abnormally warm, also?) just an idea to check.

Sorry, I guess I didn't make it clear. Usually, belts do make a high pitched squeal. This is a high pitch whine. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! I'm getting some recall work done this weekend thru Ford, I'll see if the service tech can also help.

Also, the temp gauge and the voltmeter read normal.

Does only happen while idling??? Try taking your removing your intake assembly at the air filter while it's doing it. If it gets LOUDER, then you IAC is the culprit. See recent threads re: Loud Humming or Whining for more info.

same....

same thing to me except that mine is more of a hum than a squeal. Doesn't happen all the time but everyonce in a while it does that annoyin sound... let me know cuz it bothers the piss out of me
:chug:

I have the same prob right now and I think mines the tensioner pully, but have not yet to replace it... but I think thats why mine squellls sometimes,,, but it actually only happens in high humidity outside and only for seconds then goes away (I did already replace the belts and still happens).
WHat also it can be is your drive belt. look to make sure its tight. Then again one the pullys/barrings are worn out and needs to be replaced,, humm.. maybe the waterpump , alternator, ac compressor pullies????? Its a long look,, but do the cheapest first.. so look at the tensioner pully.

Good Luck!

Mine made that high pitched noise. It ended up being the idler pulley below my tensioner pulley. The way we found out is that the school auto shop teacher said to carefully put a long screwdriver near the pulley while the engine is on and put your ear near the handle of the screwdriver. Be careful though, very careful.

Another thing you can do which probably wouldn't take much time is to take the belt off and check your idler pulley by unbolting it and spinning its bearings.

When getting the new part from a dealer, ask for a discount, if they ask for who, say it's for yourself, that's what I always do.

Does this happen right when you start the engine and the whine is there for like 5 minutes and this only happens in warm temps (80>)?? If so, I think it's your IAC. This happened to mine last year and the dealer replaced that.

It does only happen in warmer temperatures. In the mornings, I don't hear it at all, but when it gets real warm, it's incredibly loud. I just checked the air filter. It didn't get louder when I took it off, but the noise does seem to be coming from the intake. How much is the IAC and is it very hard to replace? I'm still weary of dealership service.

BTW

I had a bad IAC and all the whining from the engine once the temp got above 85 degrees. Got a new one under warranty about 14 months ago.
Got the whine AGAIN! How long (or short) is the life span of these things?

replaced mine last summer and I'm starting to hear a low howl again... May be time for a cleaning!

Would a bad IAC sound like a shop vac? That's what mine started doing today. Right when I start my Ex it starts howling and then when I put it in gear it stops.
However, once it warms up it's howling again, though only at idle speed, and it gets really loud when I have the A/C running.

man, it must be that time of year. i put my new mac on and the howling began, just like a shopvac like someone said. i cleaned the IAC with carb cleaner. it wen't away for a while but now its back. i'm going to pick up a new IAC tommorow and throw it on quick. it may be a little expensive, but worth it if it takes that damned howl away.

I had the same problem and when I looked I found a pig trapped in the engine compartment.

hey glacier, where in Ca do you live...beverly hills...as in the beverly hillbillies? ;) j/k

and for the record, god i hope it's not a pig in my engine compartment.

YES!

is there anyway to shut it up? it'll be about a week before I can get a new one and it's driving me nuts! Do these things really cost almost $90? or am I getting shafted on the price?
