The last time I used 4wd on my 91 X it ran fine except when I disengaged it and hit the brake for a stop light then the front end made a loud clunking type sound and jerked the truck pretty good. It did this everytime I used the brake to slow down for a light and then finally stopped. I'd say it did it 3 or 4 times. I haven't used 4wd again because I thought the front end would fall off the truck..

Does anyone know what could be causing this and if I need to replace something? Everything else works fine. I beleive I was using 4wd lo when this happened. It was snowing out.

Thanks,
Bob W.

Perhaps check the hubs at each front wheel - althought I don't know why braking would cause a loud thud.

Are you switching out of 4HI or 4LO when it makes the noise?

Yes it happens after I switch from 4wd to 2wd and then slow down and hit the brake. It almost feels like the front end is comming off the truck. It stops after a little bit.

I don't think its normal..

I assume you still have auto hubs.

Are you reversing after you turn off the 4x4.

No, just drive.

LOL! Sorry but your serious???

If you dont' have manual locking hubs you have to disengage the 4x4 mode and then travel in the opposite direction you were last traveling. Meaning if you were in going forward and disengage then go backwards around 30-40 feet.

You may have toasted you auto hubs.
