Sorry I couldnt find any other threads on this. Our 100K 96 makes a heckuva loud whiney sound when the engine is running. It seems to be coming from the front maybe towards the alternator, which is original. Is it possibly in the serpentine set up or the alternator itself? Water pump? I wish I could better describe the sound, it really sounds like the P/S is low or something, but it isnt. Really appreciate any help here, it is way too loud for comfort. Thanks!

aw geez sorry I didnt look very hard other than a failed search until I posted. Then I saw the correct forum with a thread on noisy P/S pumps! oops. apologies.

May be a simple fluid check and add. Possibly loose belt; sometimes a bad PS unit. Try the simple stuff first.

I have a feeling your serpentine belt idler pullies are worn. My V8 was making a whining noise from the belt area, and two new idelers fixed the problem.

They're not that hard to replace, and not too expensive. Try Ford Parts Network for replacements. The top is different from the bottom! You may also want to put a new tensioner in their, while your at it.

Agreed. I had to do mine @ 110k miles. The top one was toasted.

Yep, mine too at 115k
