Ok, this is the deal....I got a Dynomax Cat-Back Exhaust, I got the modified airbox, I got the K&N drop in....I got the sound of a pathetic excuse for a performance exhaust system! Dead Link Removed What can I do to make the exhaust really roar?! I mean I wanta scare people with the thing! Dead Link Removed

I have a few theories but I'm not sure if they will work. Let me throw up and see if they fly with you guys...

1) KKM intake to replace the airbox..will this add more sound quality?
2) Less restrictive Cat...I firgure this will work but how much does one run?

Now don't get me wrong the exhaust is a big step up from stock and my engine does inhale and exhale much better but I'm just not that impressed with it. I've heard adding a tip will give some better sound quality but I got a side exit exhaust and a tip isn't really gonna work with the pipe i got. So what's the deal? Can I improve this bad boy or should I just start looking for a new system? Dead Link Removed

Here's what you do: Put on your KKM. Get a free-flow cat. Get a flowmaster 2 chamber w/ 2.5" piping throughout. Get rid of the stock resonator. Shorten the piping that is exiting out of the muffler. Make the pipe going from the converter to the muffler shorter. That's how you do it legally.

Disconnect the entire muffler system at the end of the y-pipe and pull out the whole thing. No, running with open headers won't make your truck run like trash. It will get your neighbors and the cops pissed, but the truck will still run like a champ. Then you'll be able to scare people. Dead Link Removed

Headers headers headers! See no matter how much air you get into the engine, the stock restrictive headers can only force out so much to the cats/exhaust. by getting some aftermarket headers designed for performance, you'll notice a definite difference. Heres how my headers were in my F-150 before I replaced them, not sure what your headers are like but my Explorer headers are pretty much the same way. Its one pipe that goes from the front of the engine to the back, then has a pipe which takes that from there to the catalytic converter and on to the exhaust. Obviously there is one small pipe that takes it from the engine to the header pipe (either 3 or 4 on each side depending on if you have a V6 or a V8). what this means is that air coming out of the last chamber will have to travel about 3 inches to the cat, whereas the one from the other end of the engine will take about 26" (rough guess of course) to get to the end of pipe. Both parts of the engine (front and back) are forcing out the same amount of air, but oen takes a lot longer to get there. The result is decreased performance and not as much power (because the ones in front are pushing really hard and the ones in the back are getting too much backpressure). What a lot of aftermarket headers do is make sure that each pipe travels the same amount of space before reaching the same location, they can do this with a lot of creative pipe twisting. Not only will it increase your performance EXTREMELY NOTICEABLY (at least it did on my F-150 with the 4.6L V8) and also increase the sound going through the exhaust. They are a bit pricy and they are a pain to install, but you'll enjoy em.

Headers...the one word that makes my wallet tremble. 4 or 5 hours to install. Ouch. But if that's what will do it then I guess I could spit out the money. I found some Borla's on carparts.com for $287 with the 1/3 cupon of course. Dead Link Removed But good LORD! I don't feel that I am mechanically inclined enough to install these bad boys. I guess I could hold a very large hand gun the to mechanics head and politely ask him to do it for free....heheh just kidding Dead Link Removed . Man I hate paying people to do stuff for me. Oh well gotta do what I gotta do. OK thanks guys. And oh yeah the floor is still open for discussion. So if you have other alternative solutions by all means please let me know!

Yeah, I am lucky enough that when I was installing mine, one of my co-workers is a "freelance mechanic" after work and on weekends, and he was able to help me for the price of beer and pizza (pizza before and during install, beer AFTER - don't get the two mixed up). I thelps to be friendly because people will be friendly back I've found. I'd like to put some headers in my Explorer but can't justify the cost on them, while I'd love more power, teh cost isn't worth it to me.
