This is my first Explorer (2001 Sport Trac) that I've owned, but it seems like the steering takes an awful lot of turns lock to lock. I wonder if anyone knows whether a lower geared rank-and-pinion steering unit is available.

You're using the wrong terminology, you want a taller geared steering box. Shorter would take even more turns.
There are "quick turn" steering boxes, however I doubt one is made for explorers. Those are intended for racing. I'm sure you can find one from a mustang that'll fit, or could be modified to work. Maybe I'm crazy but I swore I've heard of a universal type deal as well.
Either way, remember by making the steering rack a "quick turn" it'll take more effort to turn the wheel. Not fun if you offroad, or tow.

I don't mind a slight bit more effort, but I'd love to be able turn the wheel no more than a quarter turn when turning from a stop sign or in a parking lot.

I don't do any off-roading in my 2WD Explorer.

Maybe look into whether a Mustang GT R&P would fit. I believe they had quicker steering.
