On the advice from several people in this forum I have decided to replace my lower intake manifold O rings.

I have that mysterious shudder in the idle problem, also the idle is weak. I have done everything to try and correct this as most here know. After some research and detailed observation I truly believe there is an air leak somewhere. Carfuel observation rules out the obvious external hoses and parts, so I am betting on the O rings, besides they are cheap and should be somewhat easy to put in.

I was wondering if anyone had the part numbers for the new lower intake O rings for a 1998 V6 Sohc motor. Also how long should I plan on for the repair and what tools do I need?

I have the ebay Ford repair CD rom but as we all know it does not tell us everything.

Thanks so much for all the support from those who have given advice.

cant help you with that part number, but is that cd worth a crap? cause i was thinkin about getting it, either that or just go pick up a haynes. which do you suggest?

I think Haynes sucks because they mix all models together. This Cd is worth the $5.

Thanks Brooklyn...

Somebody must have replaced these O rings in the past. Anyone have an idea of the difficulty of it?

It seems straight forward. Disconnect the tubes to the upper intake, remove the bolts, remove the upper intake, remove the bolts on the lower intake, install new O ring and reverse the order.

Thats how the book explains it anyway.

I have installed two OOM12 kits now and in my experience the job takes about 2.5 hours. You will need a #30 Torx and the Haynes manual does give a torque and tightening sequence. There are 8 bolts (#30 Torx) that hold the upper to the lower and then 12 10mm bolts that hold the lower down. The hardest ones to get at are the upper rear most two as they are tight against the bulkhead. This post will show you http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=487634&postcount=33 . I have no idea what the individual cost is for just the lower 'O' rings but if the OOM12 mod has not been done it might be worth fitting the whole kit at the same time. The kit costs around $60 and does have a modified chain tensioner.

I had the 00M12 recall done about 3 years ago but I suspect the lower O rings are leaking again, due to the weak idle and shudder I experience on occassion.

Don't know what the odds of the O ring leaking again are but I figure if its easy I would give it a shot. I recently removed the intake on my wifes V6
Dohc Sable, not to bad.

I am a bit confused though, are the O rings also referred to as intake gaskets? Or do the upper and lower intake have both O rings and gaskets?

Thanks.

Ok, I have heard people refer to the O rings I guess as lower intake gaskets.

Decided to scrap this job as it seems a bit to difficult for me. Might have
